For me, one of the key graphs of our times: the slow decline of benefits - and thus the lives beneficiaries can enjoy - compared to the rest of the population. Note that the decline due to not linking benefits to wages - under Labs and Nats both - is *greater* than 1991 cuts.
Thread👇🏻: #NZ’s welfare system is an utter disgrace. It is dehumanising & routinely breaches the CRPD. The sick & disabled shud not be terrorised like this. This is cruelty! #FixWINZ #NZpol @jacindaardern @CarmelSepuloni @msdgovtnz @janlogie @PaulaTesoriero
Here is a thing I find absolutely sickening, & yet another example of the horrific culture at WINZ.
My Mum literally was at death’s door four weeks ago. They discharged her to go home from Middlemore last week, with strict bed rest orders. She can’t drive. She can barely walk.
#NZPol As a long-term ill/disabled person, living alone in grinding poverty & having my health further trashed by repeatedly having to battle our welfare system to survive, I really appreciate Phil O'Reilly & NBR speaking up on this - thankyou! @CarmelSepuloni PLEASE #FixWINZ
How effective is a welfare system that 'dehumanises' those using it, questions Phil O'Reilly.
“If you look at the evidence on benefit payments, we’re simply not paying people enough to survive.”

And inadequate welfare benefits around the world are inflicting this on already-sick/disabled ppl who cannot work - thereby making us even sicker & more disabled. It's #PennywisePoundFoolish - I sincerely hope @nzlabour @NZGreens @NZFirst @msdgovtnz will do something to #FixWINZ.
Poverty causes #epigenetic changes in our genes.
Study finds that lower socioeconomic status is associated with levels of DNA methylation at > 2,500 sites, across > 1,500 genes.
#poverty leaves a mark on ~ 10 % of the genes in the genome.
