What do #paleontologists and #biologists know about #foodchains in past #geological #eras? Here is an example showing how indirect #traces can reveal #significant predators.
Can #interactions between individuals of two or more #species be directly #preserved in the #fossilrecord? Indeed, there are preserved fossils in which, for instance, #predator and #prey have been immortalized in the midst of a struggle. However, such fossils are extremely #rare, as they require the individuals involved to have died and subsequently been buried at the same time in order to undergo the #fossilizationprocess. Many fossils, conversely, originated from carcasses that were first transported away by currents, causing the original context to be lost. Consequently, specimens showing animals in direct interaction are products of extraordinary chance, extraordinary because a whole cascade of unusual #coincidences was necessary for them to jointly undergo complex biological and geological processes. Yet indirect evidence can also provide information about specific interactions between long-extinct species, such as #tracefossils. This category includes, for example, the remains of large herbivores bearing #bitemarks from predators. In ideal cases, researchers can even attribute these bite marks to specific #predatorspecies, thereby making it possible to #reconstruct the #ecologicaldynamics of #ecosystems from the distant past.
O. E. Wilson et al. (2026) examined #Miocene trace fossils from #SouthAmerica using #museumspecimens. During the Miocene, parts of South America was characterized by a vast inland body of water (#Pebas #megawetlandsystem) According to the researchers, trace fossils indicate that giant, #extinct #crocodiles were among the #apexpredators in this #aquatic and #wetland ecosystem. Notable among them is #Purussaurus #neivensis, a species reaching lengths of up to 7 meters and weighing up to 1,800 kilograms, which was one of the largest crocodiles of its time.
