Doc, data does not support this. Hamilton was lapping a clean air 1:37.2 before Leclerc exits the pitsin front of him. Immediately after Leclerc’s outlap, Hamilton and Leclerc were both lapping better than 1:37.2. That was simply Lewis’ pace on the soft tyre at that point. Over the next 13 laps, Lewis was quicker only twice, and a gap began to emerge. The narrative that he had extra pace delta on the soft is not supported by the data. He just didn’t have the edge in race pace today. Lewis’ decision to stay out under the VSC to play the track position game on Leclerc also was a big backfire, which is why he apologized in the post race radio. He knows it was a likely P3 thrown away, and there was no point at which he had pace to attempt to trouble Max’s 1-stop pace or to beat Leclerc if both were on a 2-stop. That’s just how it played out, and good job from the team not panicking and losing time with a swap that would have necessitated a re-swap shortly thereafter.
