#FallingRateofProfit final comment: Marx's comments on FRP thesis is from unpublished notes in Vol 2 of Capital. He suggests FRP is about long run breakdown of capitalism not short term bus. cycles. Also, should we assume unpublished notes are Marx's final view on FRP?

#FallingRateofProfit Another issue: capitalism is global. So using rate of profit to predict bus. cycles requires global profit data. But gathering global profit data not possible in some countries as different countries define profits differently. So no profit common denominator

#FallingRateofProfit Contemporary marxist economists use of this concept is based on US GDP data for 'Corporate Profits'. But that ignores non-corporate profits called 'Business Income' in GDP stats. Also 'base period' for calculating 'rate of change' results in different results

#FallingRateofProfit Contemporary marxist economists believe a falling rate of profit drives the short term business cycle. That assumes capital investment is driven by retained earnings only & ignores financing of investment from corp debt, equity, derivatives & other fin assets
