#FermentaBiotech: A Vitamin D3 company trying to become a specialty biotech company.
Fermenta Biotech is a 75-year-old B2B ingredient manufacturer that sits quietly behind pharma, nutraceutical, food and animal-health products. Its flagship product is Vitamin D3 (Cholecalciferol), which ultimately goes into tablets, supplements, fortified milk/biscuits and animal feed. The interesting part is that Fermenta doesn’t simply buy its key raw material and process it — it is backward-integrated into cholesterol manufacturing at Dahej, giving it better control over a critical input.
The real moat, however, is not just manufacturing. In pharmaceutical-grade Vitamin D3, customers need regulatory approvals, audits and product qualification. Once Fermenta’s ingredient is embedded in a customer’s regulatory dossier, switching suppliers can mean repeating significant qualification work. That creates a genuine switching-cost moat. Fermenta is also among the global leaders in pharma-grade D3, although it remains a much smaller player than the large European and Chinese producers.
But there is a catch. Vitamin D3 still accounts for ~77% of FY26 revenue, meaning Fermenta remains heavily dependent on one molecule. And the animal-nutrition side is much more commodity-like, where Chinese capacity can influence prices. This is why the company's future is not simply about selling more Vitamin D3 — it is about changing the product mix toward patented, regulated and higher-value products.
This is where the transformation story gets interesting.
Fermenta has received an Indian process patent for VITADEE Green, its plant-source Vitamin D3, and FSSAI approval was received in July 2026. It is targeting commercial-scale production, giving Fermenta an opportunity to participate in the growing vegan/plant-based nutrition segment rather than competing only in conventional D3.
Then comes Vitamin D3 100 SD, a spray-dried high-potency format with EDQM CEP certification, potentially allowing deeper penetration into premium European pharmaceutical applications.
The company is also moving downstream into Vitamin D3 derivatives such as Calcifediol. This is important because the company is trying to move from simply selling an ingredient to selling more specialised molecules with higher value and potentially different end markets.
And perhaps the most exciting non-D3 opportunity is Green Chemistry. Fermenta is expanding its enzyme capabilities around Penicillin G Acylase (PGA) and CAL-B Lipase. PGA is particularly interesting because Fermenta has been involved in this chemistry for decades, while India's push to rebuild domestic penicillin manufacturing could create a structural demand opportunity.
The pipeline is therefore quite broad:
VITADEE Green → plant-based D3
Calcifediol → higher-value D3 derivative
Spray-Dried D3 100 SD → premium pharma applications
PGA → antibiotic/penicillin biocatalysis
CAL-B Lipase → industrial biocatalysis
The company has approved roughly ₹110 crore of Dahej capex across plant-based D3, D3 derivatives and enzymes. The planned capacity includes around 1 tonne/year of plant-based Vitamin D3, 50 kg/year of D3 derivatives and expanded enzyme fermentation capacity.
But this is where I would remain cautious.
The transformation is promising, but it is not yet proven.
Green Chemistry/enzymes were only ~3% of FY26 revenue, while the new specialty mix remains too small to materially change the company's earnings profile. The company has achieved important scientific and regulatory milestones, but the next test is whether those milestones translate into commercial revenue, utilisation and higher margins.
So I see Fermenta as a fascinating “show-me” transformation story.
The old Fermenta is a strong Vitamin D3 franchise with genuine regulatory and manufacturing advantages.
The new Fermenta could become a much more interesting business — combining specialty Vitamin D3, patented plant-based D3, derivatives and biocatalytic enzymes.
The next few years will decide whether this is merely a good story… or a genuine commodity-to-specialty transformation.
The science is already there.
The approvals are coming through.
Now the numbers need to catch up.

And this now showing in the prices of Vitamin D3 being offered across China. They have jumped to $89/kg levels recently.
Will Fermenta Biotech - the largest player of Vitamin D3 in India be able to take advantage of this situation and expected demand to come over next few months considering - the virus is spreading across China?
