Battle of #Festubert - 18th May 1915 - 10 volunteers from the 15th Ludhiana Sikhs, 45th Rattray Sikhs and 19th Punjabis used their turbans to deliver 96 bombs within 20 yards of the enemy position supplying 2 forward companies of 15th #Sikhs & Highlanders @CO2SCOTS.
From 10 men, 8 killed or wounded.
Lt Smyth was awarded a VC. An #Indian Order of Merit & 9 #Indian Distinguished Service Medals were awarded for #gallantry.

Remembering today #Southport's Lance Serjeant Fred Loveridge who died of wounds in Béthune OTD in 1915.
Formerly a teacher at @HolyTrinity_Sch, Fred was wounded in 7KLR's charge at Richebourg St. Vaast, part of the 1915 Battle of #Festubert.

Festubert's community hall was built, after #WW1, by the town/borough of Southport.
Southport schoolchildren participated in annual visits to the area in the years between 1923 and WW2.
