Brendan Carr called in Disney's eight ABC broadcast TV station licenses early - licenses not due for renewal until 2028 - citing the company's DEI policies. He did this one day after Trump and Melania Trump publicly called for ABC to fire Jimmy Kimmel over a joke. Carr says outside pressure didn't influence his decision. The timeline is the argument. Disney filed Thursday to renew the licenses while simultaneously challenging Carr's authority to pull them early. The filing accuses the FCC of searching for a "legal pretext" to achieve a predetermined outcome - an "assault" on the licenses with "no legitimate purpose." The FCC's sole Democratic commissioner, Anna Gomez, recently wrote to Disney's CEO encouraging the company to fight. She told reporters what Disney is facing is a "sustained, coordinated campaign of censorship and control." Disney's filing names the individual consequence directly: when a broadcaster must weigh regulatory retaliation before making editorial decisions, the public loses access to journalism free from government influence. The eight stations cover New York, Los Angeles, Chicago, and Philadelphia. The review can last years.
