We are three full school weeks into #FishtankELA, and I plan to start weekly updates (with some random dailies) next week. A few reflections:

Day 13 of #FishtankELA and I didn't get into any classrooms. ๐ข I DID meet with two teams and attended a great webinar from @AEI hosted by @rpondiscio - it gave me a LOT to think about re: developing teachers and how we need to try not to cling to comfortable habits.
Day 9 of #FishtankELA. I think one of our biggest implementation challenges is going to be ensuring that teachers aren't the ones doing all the reading in grades 3-5. Right now, it feels daunting to release reading to students, so there has been a lot of read-aloud.

Day 7 of #FishtankELA and I heard from a parent of a first grader (who is also my coworker) how her daughter has been coming home and talking about the books they read in class. So often, kids don't want to talk about their learning - but they do when they have great literature!

Day 6 of #FishtankELA, fifth graders were reading whole class for an extended amount of time. In previous years, they would not have spent so much time in challenging grade-level text. Students had to use vocab words, such as โgruffโ and โtoilโto discuss text.

Day 4 of #FishtankELA and I saw kids having insights about character that were deep, teachers giving meaningful feedback, and kids giggling over their books. Having a strong resource is really upping the game for teachers working to use it with integrity.

Day 2 of #FishtankELA and I visited a 3rd grade class where every student had written a meaningful paragraph. Getting students to start writing has been one of our biggest challenges - but bc they had content to write about, they all did it! No work avoidance.
Today was our first day of implementation with Fishtank ELA from @TeachFishtank, and it was exciting! Kids with novels in their hands! Talking about identity! Doing vocabulary routines!
