Following a *4 month* long review, received manuscript rejection with comments from only a single reviewer, who had poor insight into the methodology used in the study This is an IF ~5 journal Completely unacceptable #FixPeerReview #MedTwitter

Peer review is so broken... Good enough to be used by policymakers to make legislative and regulatory decisions at national and subnational level? Yep! Good enough to make it into an obscure journal? Nope! Didn't address reviewer five's obscure pet peeve. #FixPeerReview

The amount of $ countries dedicate to medical research is one challenge. But having a robust, accountable peer review system to dispense such limited funds is the bigger need. Stress on funding systems escalates poor behaviour that has to be actively kept in check #FixPeerReview

I didn’t apply to @nhmrc in the last round, but have been saddened to hear some of the feedback hardworking applicants received. I’ve applied for #grants over 3 continents, have been reflecting on the Oz grant experience. A review of Australian grant reviews, if you like. 1/n

Sigh. Dissapointing. #FixPeerReview and tailor research impact more appropriately to different research fields. What was that old saying I once heard about grant reviewers in Australia.... “you learn to count before you learn to read?”

Yes, totally agree. @nhmrc #fixpeerreview 1) All applications submitted for peer review receive score plus comments from all spokespersons 2) Score + summary of strengths and weaknesses discussed at panel provided to applicants Other suggestions? #ideasgrants #nhmrc

Australia has moved to a peer review grant system that provides no feedback to applicants. This has to be fixed @nhmrc. Suggestion: include a scribe at each panel to capture key strengths and weaknesses discussed What's your suggestion? #fixpeerreview
