When children visit zoos, aquariums or mobile zoos, they're often told it's educational. But there's another lesson being taught - one that often goes unquestioned. That it's acceptable to keep animals behind bars, in tanks or in temporary enclosures for our entertainment. That wild animals exist for us to watch, handle and use. We believe there's a better lesson to teach - that animals are sentient individuals with their own lives, relationships and interests. They deserve to be respected for who they are, not reduced to exhibits or attractions. If we want children to truly care about wildlife, we should inspire them to respect the natural world, not accept captivity as normal. True education fosters empathy, curiosity and an understanding of animals in the context of their own lives.
