On today's episode of #FridayFarmingFact, This is the data for Nigeria's agricultural trade between 2017 and 2025.
You could see the slow reductions in agricultural imports from 2017 and significant increment in Nigeria's export value.
You'd ask yourself, how come?
Former President Buhari (RiP) policies are geared towards import ban on key food & improving local industries example is our rice sector. One reason why importation dropped.
Why do we have high exports, what are we exporting?
You should give a big shout out to the Cocoa, Cashew nut and Sesame value chain, they're the export champions for our country.
The pest & disease challenge Ghana and Cote d'voire had in the last 3 years gave rise to astronomic demand for our Cocoa & Cocoa farmers came through and were heavily rewarded for it.
However, Tinubu's govt opened border for key food like Maize etc, but the balance of trade between import and export favours the export bcs of the price of those export goods.
Shout out to Buhari & Cocoa farmers π

Food inflation is the rise in the cost of food and drink over time, making it more expensive for consumers to buy the same items
A basket of food that costs 100k in January goes for 114k in August.
For me the key reason this is happening is govt policy & the dependency on small scale farmers who are limited in resources.
If we are going to depend on small farmers we should provide them with supporting services to help them scale beyond the subsistence level to medium scale.
Food inflation is a current worldwide challenge & Nigeria a developing country is not exempted.

Since 2014, Nigeria has led the rice production giant of Africa.
Thanks to the failed Anchor Borrowers Program it had a huge effect on our rice production level.
Shout out to Kebbi, Bayelsa & Nasarawa states for championing rice production in Nigeria.

Between 2016 to 2022, Nigeria imported agricultural produce much more than they export.
The difference is 1.27trillion naira.
How might we reduce this huge bill?
Ignoring this is not sustainable for any economy esp job creation, local industry devpt

When it comes to Apple production in Africa only 4 countries produce 98% of it.
Africa's Apple share in Global production is only 3.8%
Jos Plateau/Taraba weather can grow Apple in Nigeria but not commercial qty.
Have you ever had a Nigerian made Apple?

Today's #FridayFarmingFact reviews the peak population of sub-saharan African countries by the year 2100.
Nigeria tops the chart with 477m people.
The question I asked myself is
"Will the agricultural practices & developmental policies we are practicing today sustain our offspring this time?"
How will Nigeria of 2100 look like in terms of food security?
Will we still be the giant of Africa?
How will our rural communities operate?
Will there be sufficient food?
Will our agricultural practices be better those years?
How do you think Nigeria would look like in 2100?

There's no better investment than Agriculture. Especially at a critical point in our nation where food security is topical.
Investing in Agric is your best decision
Presco is now a Trillion naira company. The share currently is sold at over N110.

Nigeria was and still the world's highest producer of Kolanut.
The value chain of Kolanut is enormous and a key source of livelihood for hundreds of thousands of value chain players (producer to processors)
Kolanut was and still -in the class of Cocoa, but it has more usefulness to human than cocoa.
To maintain the Kolanut leadership Nigeria needs deliberate actions especially in new Kolanut plantation, improved seed, extension service & creating a seamless export supporting process.

West Africa is the largest producer of Cashew in Africa with 1.89m tons per year -@TheIntelpoint
Cote d'voire holds the Cashew Crown as the largest cashew producer in the world. Nigeria was top cashew producer in Africa between 2001 - 2010. Presently Nigeria is not even in the top 10 largest producer.
Sadly, almost all the cashew nuts produced by these African countries are shipped unprocessed leaving them with crumbs and little earnings.
As at 2023, a ton of Unprocessed Cashew is sold for N600k
Now hear this...
While a ton of processed Cashew is sold for N22m.
The African countries need to ensure value addition to their raw materials hence they'll continue to be shortchanged by the West.
Good morning my neighbor.

Nigeria is the 3rd leading Sesame seed producer in Africa, trailing behind Sudan and Tanzania. In 2012 Nigeria peaked production at 995,000 metric tonnes.
Sesame seed is the highest agricultural produce exported out of Nigeria valued at $20m annually. Japan is the destination of our Sesame seed and the highest importer in the world.
When it comes to sesame seed production - Jigawa, Benue & Nasarawa state farmers are the major producers.
This high export crop is a money spinner for grains marketers as it is one of the easiest grains to store/manage also it has a ready market.
Shout out to the Northern Farmers for being the light bearer for this amazing grain.

Kaduna is the Maize capital of Nigeria, no other states come close. Followed by Niger state. Niger state has a bigger land size (largest state in Nigeria) but can't compete with the Kaduna farmers when it comes to maize.
Maize is a critical grain in our national food security, ~60% of maize produced are consumed by the livestock sector.
Northern Nigeria is the main producer of food for Nigerians, hence we need a secure, safe & banditry free north for our nation to thrive.
A big shout out to Kaduna state farmers for the amazing work they do in the Maize π½ sector of our agriculture.

In 2023, Nigeria consumed
- 324m chicken
- 28m goat
- 19m sheep
- 8m pig
- 3m cattle.
The chicken is a given we all know that, but look at the consumption of pig π€
Nigeria consumes almost 3x more pig than cattle & our Muslim citizens do not eat pigs.
This data is a good way to understand the consumption pattern in relation to religion
Can we say Nigerian Christians consume more meat than Muslims?
Or pig/pork business has more players and value chain than cattle?
Would you say pig business is a better value chain than cattle?
What would you say about this data?
@TheIntelpoint data presentation is amazing, giving us insight into agriculture in Africa ππ―

In 2024, the US exported $318.7 million in agricultural products to Nigeria. Wheat emerged the top export at $147.97 million, and accounted for nearly half (46.43%) of all exports - @TheIntelpoint
Food preparations like egg powder etc
Even soyabean is imported.
Can we be self sufficient enough to grow these crops to self sufficiency? Yes we can.
Is it achievable in our lifetime?
What would be your answer ?

#FridayFarmingFact
Nigeria has the largest arable land in Africa. Aable land is a land that is suitable to grow crops & having land directly impacts a nation's food security.
Regardless of Nigeria's condition, Agriculture is still the only way we can retain her economic power.

#FridayFarmingFact
Nigeria remains the largest forest owner in West Africa but has the highest forest decline in West Africa.
Between 2019 and 2022, Nigeriaβs forest area shrank by nearly 5,000 kmΒ², while Ghana, saw a consistent yearly increase - @TheIntelpoint
Urbanization is the highest cause of deforestation - real estate people cutting down trees to build blocks of flats without growing another.
Deforestation increases green house gasses COΒ², heat stress like what's happening in Lagos.
We need serious forestation policies to save our forest.

#FridayFarmingFact
Between 2014 - 2023, Agric had one of the least Foreign investment
For a country that has 25% of his GDP from agriculture with a strong youth population you'd think Agric FDI would be great
Factors like insecurity, inflation & poor amenities are a blocker.

#FridayFarmingFact
This 7 years data shows the value of Nigeria's export to our import.
The difference as at 2022 was N1.27 Trillion @TheIntelpoint
I can't even imagine what the numbers would be now?
How might we reduce this huge gap?
Pls share your insight

There are 49 countries in the Sub-Saharan region of Africa (Pix B) and 51.5% of the total population are involved in Agriculture - @TheIntelpoint
In every 10 individual at least 5 is involved in agriculture.
Tell me why these country have not enacted the Maputo declaration of 2003!
If half of your population is involved in food production why is it a problem to allocated at least 10% of your budget to improve that field your people are involved in.
Climate is great, young population, land is fertile, untapped resources but we await crmbs from the West bcs we have lazy leaders!
How can we be so Rich and then be this Poor?!

#FridayFarmingFact
Between 2020 & 2022, the majority of products registered by NAFDAC are majorly food - @TheIntelpoint
We can deduce that food processing & packaging is on the increase & farmers, the raw material suppliers are key in any productive system.
However, the importance of ensuring our food value chains are well regulated should be the focal point for NAFDAC, not just the people registering but those not registering.
- Using Sniper to preserve beans
- Burning cow skin with dirty tyres
- Abattoirs looking dirty & stinky
- Boiling meat with Panadol
- Using detergent or Klin or Ariel to soak Cassava for Akpu
- Using Hypo in Fufu
These are key issues we want the @NafdacAgency to help solve.
Even the herbal concoctions many Nigerians are drinking there's no sensitization about the dangers and many are also adulterated... Especially those Alagbo that sells on the street.
We need a systemic cleansing.

When is Nigeria going to be serious about food security?
The way financial institutions overlook agriculture in this country is sad.
In 2024, Agriculture got only 4.4% credit from DMBs, the same year Agriculture was the highest contributor to the GDP.
I mean when are we going to be serious about food? What is the problem gangan? Why is agriculture the least funded when over 60% of the population works directly & indirectly in this sector.
Who's talking about this funding system in policy offices, the resilience of agriculture to be able to drive GDP with almost no funding. Imagine the growth we will experience f we fund this sector.
Anyways, I can't even blame the DMBs when the govt is not even serious about agriculture, of the total 2025 budget only 1.3% was allocated to agriculture when 60%+ Nigerians work in agric.
Even if the govt wants to mandate a percentage from banks to agriculture - they can't bcs even them only gave a less than 2%, you can't ask me to do what you didn't do. If the govt wants a change it should naturally starts with them.
The per capital allocation from Fed Govt to agriculture is only N3,225 i.e for your food security, we are going to spend "Tiri Kay" per person.
My friend to be honest, food inflation is not going away!
We are on a long ride!
Good morning
