They distributed leaflets that denounced Hitler and the Nazi regime's atrocities. These leaflets were meticulously hand-crafted, filled with passionate calls for resistance and the restoration of justice in Germany. The risks were immense. The Gestapo, Nazi Germany's secret police, were relentless and brutal in tracking down dissenters. In February 1943, while distributing these leaflets at the University of Munich, Sophie and her brother Hans were caught. They were quickly tried, and in a grim demonstration of the regime's cruelty, sentenced to death. Sophie's actions, fueled by moral conviction and immense bravery, ultimately led to her execution by guillotine.
