Never been a big fan of muddy coasts, but #saltmarsh at Dengie is spectacular! #GECIMAGE is from 2000/2018 and shows rapidly eroding marsh edge with shells embedded in the mud incorporated in landward-migrating shell ridge (#chenier). Coastal squeeze also apparent. @timeforgeog

Before and after #GECIMAGE of massive #rockfall of the #cliffs of Dover. contribution of material from cliff erosion is not always considered an important part of the nearshore sediment budget. Protecting the base of coastal cliffs can cause erosion elsewhere! @timeforgeog

This #GECIMAGE shows the spectacular sloping (Type A) #shoreplatform of Robin Hood Bay. Despite the important role of weathering in shaping these features, GCSE/A-level syllabi still refer to these as 'wave-cut platforms'. This is why I wrote this update: https://t.co/pVz9qYiiJU.

There is a distinct lack of #deltas in the UK due to a lack of large river systems and an abundance of macrotidal and unfilled #estuaries. The Lake District is one of very few locations in the UK where deltas can be found. Here is the Ulls Water delta at Glenridding. #GECIMAGE

These offshore #breakwaters at Elmer, Sussex, are expensive #coastal #defences. The objective is to create #salients, but not #tombolos as these would block any potential #littoral #drift. This #GECIMAGE represents high tide; at low tide one can walk to the breakwaters.

The spectacular Alexandria #dunefield and the Sundays River #estuary in the Eastern Cape Province of South Africa, the @MarineSciPlym residential field trip location. These transverse dunes are 20-40 m high and migrate towards the ENE at a mean speed of 1.8 m per year. #GECIMAGE

Certainly in the top 10 of my favorite coastal land forms: the flying or winged #spits along the north shore of the Sea of Azov (Obitochna spit). These large features are formed by #longshore drift caused by waves striking the coast at a large angle (high-angle waves). #GECIMAGE

St Ninian's Isle, Shetland, probably the best example of a #tombolo in the UK. Strictly speaking, the term 'isle' is incorrect as even at high tide one can walk to the non-island! Hashtag #GECIMAGE is now unique. and the idea is that people can contribute their own images ...
