Day 25 of #GLADvent: Merry Christmas from Gladstone's Library! These cards from our archive were sent to William Gladstone during his first term as Prime Minister. We particularly like the flowers, and are sure Gladstone would have liked the tree chopping imagery!
Day 24 of #GLADvent: Don’t be fooled by the svelte frames of the Reading Room team – we are regularly to be found moving hundreds of books with merely the aid of a book trolley! We always aim for the most appropriate use of shelving, from both reader and conservation perspective.
Day 23 of #GLADvent: We are always researching and composing blog-posts about aspects of the Library’s history and collections. Look out for future posts about a C.S. Lewis Summer School held at Gladstone’s in 1984, and how women's history features in the rare books and archives.
Day 22 of #GLADvent: A regular task at Gladstone's- processing new acquisitions with a bookplate, stamps and spine label. Processing helps us to identify books as ours, while also allowing our readers to locate them on the shelves. Have a look for your next read on our catalogue!
Day 21 of #GLADvent: Recently we have been making custom book supports. These board mounts will be used during digitisation and for displays – including to display our Book of Thanks, which records everyone who so generously sponsored a shelf at Gladstone’s during lockdown.

Day 20 of #GLADvent: Today we are getting the library ready for its two week Christmas break. We like to make the most of the quiet library to make everything neat and tidy - and we ain't afraid of no dust! #dustbusters
The library will reopen on 3rd January - see you then!
Day 19 of #GLADvent: Today we are working on presentations for the Library’s 2022 events programme. This adorable 1759 printer's device of cherubs working in a print-room will accompany a talk on book history by Assistant Librarian, Isobel. Note the tiny pages strung up to dry!
We are packing up soon! Our last overnight guests will check out tomorrow and then we close our doors until our planned reopening on January 3rd.
So, in addition to #GLADvent, we will post regular reminders that we are in #hibernation.
We don't want any disappointed visitors!
Day 18 of #GLADvent: This childhood letter of Gladstone's shows that he prized his books from a young age - something we continue to this day. Regular condition checks are essential for older books as we balance their preservation with the research needs of our many readers.
Day 17 of #GLADvent: This week we had a visit by the conservation team from North East Wales Archives. Gladstone’s collections illustrate the various conservation issues common to old books & so provide useful first-hand reference for trainee conservators working with the NEWA.
Day 16 of #GLADvent: We are always delighted to welcome new readers to Gladstone’s Library! Just visit the Enquiry Desk, any day from 9am-5pm, to register and join us! Registering is FREE, although we are very grateful for any donations towards the cost of producing reader cards.
Day 15 of #GLADvent: As we are a reference library where no books are 'issued', we ask readers to leave books on the Reading Room trolley so that we can 'circulate' them (record usage) before re-shelving. This important process aids decisions on organisation & future aquisitions.
Day 14 of #GLADvent: We receive a wide range of enquiries from all over the world, on topics as varied as women's history, churches, & children's literature. These enquiries allow us to think about our collections in new ways & discover the exciting research being done with them!
Day 13 of #GLADvent: Today our Reading Room Assistant, Louise, is cleaning some of our art collection ready to move them to a better storage space. Our museum vacuum allows us to carefully clean some of the more delicate items in the collection.
Day 12 of #GLADvent: Every day we come across another little gem within the pages of the Library’s collections – an illustration, or interesting text, or even an inscription or marginalia! We photograph and research each discovery (and then share it with you all on social media!)
Day 11 of #GLADvent: People deposit archives at the Library in some *interesting* containers, such as this old suitcase! We often have to do some provenance research to find out about their history before putting them in acid-free boxes to protect them for the future.
Day 10 of #GLADvent: Gladstone's Library is home to thousands of books printed pre-1900! We use cushions and weights when reading, but inevitably, especially fragile items require extra care. Today we are gently securing delicate volumes with fabric tape and acid-free wallets.
Our amazing band of readers and researchers bring such a wealth of knowledge to Gladstone’s, and we love working with them to ensure they can make the very best use of our collections. #GLADvent
Day 9 of #GLADvent: Today we are meeting with a donor who has not only helped the Library to expand its collections in his personal area of expertise, but also produced a booklet about these books to assist other readers!
