LAS VEGAS ISN’T BUYING IT
Yesterday Donald Trump flew into my city, Las Vegas, to sell a promise.
The people who actually live and work here showed up to return it.
Not with applause.
With protest signs.
A few blocks from his polished roundtable at the new AC Hotel in Symphony Park, workers, organizers, and everyday Nevadans gathered in the desert to say what the White House refuses to hear. “No Tax on Tips” is not saving them. It is not even close.
For many, it is a headline with an expiration date. A temporary patch that disappears by 2028 while the cost of living keeps climbing like it is on a rocket.
Meanwhile, inside the event, the president reportedly admitted he did not even know what a “corner store” is.
Let that land.
The man pitching economic relief to service workers in Las Vegas does not understand the most basic building block of everyday American life. Not the strip. Not the penthouse. The corner store.
Out here, that disconnect is not funny. It is expensive.
Tourism is soft. Workers are feeling it in real time. Bellmen, servers, housekeepers. The people who keep this city alive are watching their tips shrink while their rent, groceries, and gas climb into the stratosphere.
And here is the part nobody in power wants to say out loud.
This is not just policy failure.
This is corporate greed running wild.
Casinos, hotels, and massive hospitality chains have jacked up prices to levels that push everyday Americans out of the market. A weekend in Las Vegas now feels like a luxury reserved for the wealthy, not a getaway for working families.
So, people stop coming.
Or they come and spend less.
Either way, workers lose.
That is the “Trump slump” @Culinary226 union leaders are talking about. Not a slogan. A reality. Fewer bookings. Lower occupancy. Smaller tips. Bigger bills.
And yet we are told this administration has done more for tourism than any president before.
Look around.
If this is success, why are workers protesting in the streets outside his event?
Why are seasoned hospitality veterans saying they are making less than before?
Why does the energy in this city feel like anxiety instead of opportunity?
Las Vegas is not confused.
Las Vegas is responding.
The protestors understood something the photo ops did not. You cannot spin your way out of economic pain. You cannot brand your way out of empty wallets.
And you definitely cannot fix a struggling city if you do not understand how its people actually live.
This is not about politics.
This is about survival in a city built on tips, tourism, and trust.
Right now, all three are under pressure.
And the people of Las Vegas are done pretending otherwise.
