Worthless NFT Discussion
Various media outlets have tried to bash NFTs recently. Based on some evidence that 95% of NFT projects are worthless.
It's not surprising at all to observe such a failure rate given the low barriers to enter the market.
Such stats are similar to the traditional art sector where the vast majority of artists make little income with their work.
Rather than focusing on the large number of unsuccessful projects, one need to take projects and artists into account who made it.
I propose the following five categories that range from "worthless" to "grail".
1⃣ Worthless
This category comprise projects that either never gained traction, were indented rug pulls, or went to zero for other reasons post mint date. This category is by far the largest one. And with AI-enabled artwork, there will be millions of them.
2⃣ Question marks
These projects are still alive, have a sufficiently large community but are not established yet. They may offer some utility and/or nice artwork but may just lack enough eyeballs. But many of them will fail in the long-run.
3⃣ Established
The third category includes already established projects with a certain utility such as in the case of @veefriends, @RugRadio, or @nftnow. Or because they were dropped by established (digital) artists or brands, e.g., @Azuki or @pudgy_penguins.
4⃣ Blue Chips
Projects with significant sales during the bear and large organization and/or a resilient community backing it. @yugalabs BAYC (floor pieces) are one example. Or Rare Pepes like the Naka (@pepe__wtf).
5⃣ Grails
The most important category in this discussion. The seven to eight digits sales from Pak (@muratpak), @beeple, Snowfro (@ArtOnBlockchain), @tylerxhobbs, @xcopyart, @dmitricherniak, or projects like @cryptopunks and 1/1 Rare Pepes are the most evident counter argument for the "NFTs are worthless" claim.
And these sales did not just happen during the 2021/22 "bubble". One example is Dmitri Cherniak’s Ringers #879 (‘The Goose’) that was picked up for $6.2 million by @punk6529 in June this year.

But true basher say: "The NFT market is ded. Current sales volumes and valuations are down badly. There are no innovations."
Not true! The most exciting new development in 2023 has happened on the chain of all chains: Bitcoin.
The Ordinals protocol was introduced by Casey Rodamor (@rodarmor). It enables a new way to numerate individual sats (1 BTC = 100 million sats) and to "inscribe" artwork directly on Bitcoin.
Early inscriptions (@sub1k_ordinals), the TwelveFold drop by @yugalabs, innovative artwork (like OCM Dimensions by @OnChainMonkey), or PFPs like OMB (@OrdinalMaxiBiz) have fetched sales of multiple BTC each.
Overall, the NFT market is in a consolidation phase after the tremendous pump in 2021/22. But one has to focus on the (literal) right part of the value distribution, where the blue chip and grail projects are located.
