#UPDATE: Thousands Vote in Galmudug’s First One-Person, One-Vote Election
Thousands of voters headed to polling stations on Thursday as #Somalia's central state of #Galmudug held its first one-person, one-vote elections, in what the election body described as a significant milestone in the country's ongoing democratic transition.
Long queues formed at polling centres across 11 districts, including the regional capital, #Dhusamareb, where residents cast ballots to elect members of local councils and the Galmudug State Parliament.
According to Somalia’s National Independent Electoral Commission, 267,420 registered voters are eligible to participate in the polls. Twelve political organisations are competing for 89 seats in the Galmudug State Parliament, with 369 candidates contesting the election, including 57 women and 312 men.
Meanwhile, elections for 243 local council seats are being contested by 16 political organisations. A total of 924 candidates are running, including 198 women and 726 men.
To ensure security during voting, the Galmudug administration imposed a temporary curfew and movement restrictions across major towns. The restrictions exempt security forces, election officials, accredited media, and other personnel directly involved in the electoral process.
Political analysts say the vote could mark an important step in Somalia's efforts to expand direct elections and gradually replace the clan-based indirect electoral system that has shaped the country's politics for decades.
