🌉 #BridgeToBarak | ◾ Lifeline Restored ahead of Time : #GammonBridge Reopens, Reconnecting #BarakValley with Central Assam, Tripura & Mizoram A major boost to regional infrastructure and connectivity, the Gammon Bridge at Badarpurghat — a crucial lifeline on National Highway 6 — has been reopened to the public well ahead of schedule, fulfilling a key promise made by Assam Chief Minister Dr Himanta Biswa Sarma. The sudden closure of the bridge on May 21, was necessitated by the detection of critical structural damage during a routine inspection. Experts flagged risks of collapse due to ageing infrastructure, stress from high traffic volume, and prolonged wear, prompting immediate action to avert disaster. The government swiftly shut down the bridge to ensure public safety and began urgent repair work. The bridge’s closure severely affected connectivity between Guwahati and Barak Valley, stranding lakhs and disrupting transport of essential goods across Tripura, Mizoram and Manipur. With limited alternatives, people were forced to rely on dangerous ferry crossings, makeshift detours, and even walking across railway bridges. True to his commitment, Chief Minister Dr Himanta Biswa Sarma pledged a fast-tracked restoration, and the bridge is now fully operational for light vehicles and buses — ahead of the projected timeline. This early reopening not only re-establishes the region’s primary transport route but also allows the government to resume full-scale work at the #Tarapur sinking zone, another infrastructural bottleneck near #Silchar. This swift action goes beyond mere construction — it reflects decisive leadership, seamless institutional coordination and a governance model rooted in public welfare. Barak Valley is no longer treated as peripheral — it is prioritized. And the restored Gammon Bridge stands as a symbol of that resolve.

As promised to the people of Cachar, we have completed the Gammon Bridge repair ahead of schedule and dedicated it to the public yesterday. This will restore the old connectivity link, ease up movement in the region & allow us to resume work at the Tarapur Sinking Zone.

The Gammon Bridge over the Barak River, connecting Katigorah and Badarpur on NH 6, has been in a dilapidated state for the past few months, turning into a death trap for commuters. #GammonBridge #NH6 #BarakGuwahatiRoad #Commuters | @NHAI_Official @CMOfficeAssam @dccachar
