Polygon (MATIC) has unveiled crucial governance proposals as it transitions from MATIC to POL as its new primary crypto asset. These proposals follow the successful deployment of the POL token contract on the Goerli testnet on October 4th.
The main governance proposals for the transition to POL on the #Polygon #Mainnet are PIP-17, PIP-19, and PIP-25.
1. **PIP-17:** This proposal suggests minting 10 billion POL tokens, mirroring a 1:1 migration from MATIC. POL is intended to enhance value transfers within Polygon 2.0's network of layer-2 blockchains supporting #zkEVM, Polygon's new zero knowledge-based virtual machine. POL will serve staking, community ownership, and governance purposes if approved.
2. **PIP-19:** PIP-19 proposes making POL the primary token for gas fees on the Polygon blockchain, replacing a key aspect of MATIC's current functionality. To ensure a seamless transition, the proposal aims to convert all MATIC held in Plasma Bridge to POL, fulfill withdrawal requests from the Polygon blockchain by converting MATIC tokens into POL, and credit all deposits into the Polygon blockchain in POL. Additionally, network validators will continue to receive MATIC tokens until a future governance proposal facilitates the shift to POL rewards.
3. **PIP-25:** This proposal suggests doubling the number of POL tokens minted during the mainnet contract launch, increasing it from 10 billion to 20 billion. The additional tokens would be sent to the MATIC burn address, effectively removing all MATIC-equivalent tokens from circulation after the 1:1 conversions through PIP-17 and PIP-19, while maintaining a 1:1 ratio with POL's remaining 10 billion token supply.
The common theme among these #governance proposals is to make the transition from MATIC to POL as smooth as possible. POL is designed as a direct replacement for MATIC, aligning with its #tokenomics structure and utility, and is better suited for Polygon 2.0's zkEVM #ecosystem.
Despite MATIC's underperformance in 2023, the CoinCodex algorithm predicts a new all-time high for MATIC in 2024. MATIC has experienced a YTD decline of 25.84% and a 63.96% decrease from its December peak. However, the algorithm anticipates a 574% increase within six months from the current price level, potentially reaching a new all-time high.
