🏈 What if fantasy football became a math lesson? I’ve been working on a new idea for my classroom this year, and I’m pretty excited about it. I’m calling it the Edgeworth Gridiron Math League 🏟️ Instead of just learning about multiplication, division, fractions, decimals, percentages, averages, and data on a worksheet… my students are going to use those skills to manage their own fantasy football teams. Each classroom will have its own team made up of real #NFL players. Every Tuesday, we’ll look at how those players performed in the previous week’s games and do the math. How many fantasy points did our quarterback earn? How much did our running backs contribute? What percentage of our team’s points came from our receivers? Did we improve from last week? How do we compare to the other classrooms? And most importantly… Can we prove that our team is the best using the data? The goal isn’t just to teach kids how to calculate fantasy football points. It’s to show them that math is everywhere. Math helps us analyze information. Math helps us make decisions. Math helps us recognize patterns. Math helps us defend our thinking. And if I can get a group of 5th graders arguing about whether their fantasy team is better than another class while they’re calculating percentages and analyzing statistics… I’ll take that as a victory 🏆 I’m hoping this becomes something bigger than just a classroom activity. I’d love to see other teachers take the idea, put their own spin on it, and find ways to connect things their students might be interested in with the math they’re learning.
