On Samhain, October 31, Irish folklore comes alive as guisers don straw masks or blackened faces 🎭 to impersonate spirits—magical disguises that ward off mischievous sídhe fairies 👻✨.
A County Antrim tale tells of #guisers also called "Straw Boys," in straw “masks” tricking a miserly farmer into sharing ale 🍺, as he mistakes them for visitors from the fairy realm 🧚♂️
During this Celtic festival, when the veil between worlds thins, these coverings transformed revelers into liminal figures, blending mischief and protection.
Rooted in ancient tradition, guising at Samhain let people navigate supernatural chaos, confusing or appeasing fairies and ancestors. The Antrim story, passed down through oral lore, captures the trickster spirit as guisers enforced generosity, echoing Celtic values of community 🤲🌾.
Today, Samhain’s legacy lives on in Halloween, with straw masks inspiring modern costume traditions 🎃. For more on guising’s enchanted lore, explore The Pagan Religions of the Ancient British Isles by Ronald Hutton or Irish Folk and Fairy Tales by W.B. Yeats! 📚 #BookchatWeekly 📖🫖

@xtinexoop @BladeoftheS I live in Glasgow and it's definitely still a thing! Had some #guisers round earlier.
Thanks to all our guisers tonight - all the jokes and songs and fabulous costumes worked! The pesky ghost's been scared off back into the graveyard (for another year at least!) #Halloween2024 #Guisers #NeepLife

Windy says that’s me made up about 50 x sweetie pokes for the #guisers tonight. I’ll leave them on the doorstep and pin a wee note on the door “take one, and fuk off”

No #guisers, not one! Did spot this wonderful pumpkin though, carved by a #DoctorWho fanatic friend. Highland #guising (from dis-guise) is not the same as #trickortreat, guisers perform for their treat, a wee joke or a dance or a song or something. Missed them tonight 🥲.

One of my favourite nights of the year in #Scotland when the #guisers turn up with their funny costumes and jokes. A guy was literally a bloody shower! And my own plague doctor ready to spook the neighbours. Booo-berry pie anyone? #Halloween2022 #Scottishtraditions
A hundred kids through the door tonight. Halloween and Guising still going strong in this part of Glasgow 😊👻 #Halloween #guising #guisers #samhaim
My token gesture to #Halloween 🎃🎃🎃
I believe that an illuminated pumpkin indicates you're happy for #guisers to knock.
Picked up some sweet treats in Home Bargains just in case!

Happy Hallowe’en!!👻
3 coos in a field. Which one is on holiday?
The one with the wee calf.
May some good jokes come your way tonight!
Love it! (Scottish guisers traditionally need to tell a joke, rhyme for their treats.) #Halloween #pawsonplastic #jokes #guisers #fun
In honour of #Killieween (if you know you know) some spooky weather info! #guisers #halloween #kilmarnock
