Early results from an EPRI-led, @CalEnergy-led demonstration are showing how a high-efficiency HVAC retrofit could help reduce cooling and natural gas reheat loads in healthcare facilities.
EPRI is evaluating a 9,000-cfm high-efficiency dehumidification system (#HEDS) retrofit at an operating healthcare facility in coastal Southern California.
Since operation began in September 2026, preliminary results include:

⚡ 𝟰𝟮% 𝗹𝗼𝘄𝗲𝗿 𝗰𝗵𝗶𝗹𝗹𝗲𝗿 𝗹𝗼𝗮𝗱 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝟴𝟱% 𝗹𝗼𝘄𝗲𝗿 𝗻𝗮𝘁𝘂𝗿𝗮𝗹-𝗴𝗮𝘀 𝗿𝗲𝗵𝗲𝗮𝘁 𝗹𝗼𝗮𝗱 during milder, more typical coastal conditions

The demonstration is also examining real-world implementation considerations, including commissioning, controls integration, air balance, and maintaining critical healthcare facility requirements. Results remain preliminary, with monitoring and independent verification planned through Q3 2027.
