Back from last week’s 2nd annual #HoodSummit—where we gather a subset of our customers together, reveal new products and features, take their feedback and host sessions on a bunch of topics: from options to futures to broad market views, together with experts in their field. The energy in the room during the product reveals on night 1’s keynote told us we’re building what people want. While I’m excited about all of it, the simple upcoming ability to hold multiple individual accounts, to divide up my investments by goal, is very appealing. I especially loved connecting with our clients, and exchanging ideas. I learned a ton from them—and our speakers. The feeling of community was potent and it truly reinforced our why. A few of my learnings: -Index options implied volatility is now available on Robinhood Legend and will give you what the market expects for this year when looking at the year end option—meaning it’s a good way to see consensus year end market level expectations. When we looked at it a couple of days ago, the market was pricing in a year-end range of about 6000-7000 for the S&P 500. -A favorite quote from our panel on “where ideas come from” is from 22V’s technical analysis expert, John Roque @daChartLife: “Number 1, you want to own stocks that are above upward sloping 200 day moving averages. Period. ...Number 2, if you look on a rate of change basis, is the stock going up on a 12-month rate of change basis?…Number 3, is that stock in a strong group or a strong sector? If that stock is in a strong group or a strong sector, then I would say that the wind is at your back.” -Our short-selling expert, CIO of @SafkhetCapital, Fahmi Quadir, gave us 3 takeaways: 1) don’t short stocks. But if you must, 2) manage your position sizing, and 3) watch your timing. She tends to wait to short any material amount until after the initial catalyst starts to push the stock down. Her focus is on companies with “financial shenanigans” and fraudulent practices. Oh and we have the best damn clients we could ask for.
