In 2022, #HOVAlvin was certified to 6500m dive depth– 4 mi below the ocean surface. Currently, #WHOI, @Scripps_Ocean @Occidental @UCLA & @Caltech researchers are taking the sub on its deepest scientific dives yet.
@Science shares what it took to get there: https://t.co/62onaHgr1C

"what we need to do is build a sub that can dive to [Titanic-level depths] repeatedly and safely and demonstrate that you can do that"
*SIGH* We've made THOUSANDS of dives in #HOVAlvin since it got it's original titanium sphere (in 1973) & a 4000m depth cert #jfc #THISISNOTNOVEL

Who's been watching #SecretsOfTheOctopus?
With their large eyes + elephant-like ears, these cirrate octopuses were named after the Disney character Dumbo. They've been observed as deep as 22,000 ft (7,000 m)! Scientists captured this footage in the deep-sea sub #HOVAlvin.
😲 Scientists from #WHOI, @Scripps_Ocean, and @LehighU recently found 5 new hydrothermal vents!
The discovery was supported by the @NSF – and accelerated by teamwork between #AUVSentry + #HOVAlvin.

There's a lot of "what it's like to dive in #HOVAlvin" videos out there, but this one has the added bonus of being fairly short & having my bf in it as the pilot! 🥰 #imissfieldwork https://t.co/ddkHRbCNWN
From the 1950s-90s, Betty Bunce was the first #WHOI #female #oceanographer to: go to sea for more than a day; serve as #ChiefSci on a WHOI ship; become dept. chair; and dive in #HOVAlvin.

#Throwback to 1991, when scientists in #HOVAlvin found themselves in a “snowstorm” at the bottom of the ocean!
It turned out to be white bacterial matter spewing from hydrothermal vents shortly after a seafloor volcanic eruption– now know as the “snowblower vent” phenomenon.
