It has become fashionable in some policy circles to frame Somalia’s story as one of endless failure, a country perpetually unable to take ownership of its security, rebuild its institutions, or govern itself effectively. That narrative is not only incomplete; it is unfair. Consider what Somalia has actually attempted over the past four years. Under President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud, the Federal Government has pursued three of the most difficult tasks any fragile state can undertake: fighting an entrenched terrorist insurgency, rebuilding national security forces, and advancing a constitutional review process that is essential for legitimate elections and functional statehood. No serious student of post-conflict reconstruction would describe even one of these tasks as easy. Somalia has been attempting all three at once, under fire, and with shrinking resources.

President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud arrived in Addis Ababa, Federal Democratic Republic of Ethiopia, for a working visit. During the visit, the President will hold talks with Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed Ali to discuss bilateral issues of mutual interest, including trade, economic cooperation, security, and regional peace and prosperity.

During the meeting, the two sides discussed matters of mutual interest and explored avenues to strengthen bilateral cooperation. Somalia reaffirmed its adherence to the One‑China principle, recognizing the People’s Republic of China as the sole legal government of China, regarding Taiwan as an inalienable part of Chinese territory, and opposing any form of “Taiwan independence”. The President conveyed Somalia’s sincere appreciation for China’s sustained support for the country’s state‑building efforts and expressed gratitude for Beijing’s consistent endorsement of Somalia’s sovereignty, territorial integrity and national unity.
