A Critical Habit of Learning"
Active listening is "the act of fully hearing and comprehending the meaning of what someone is saying."
Unless your students understand HOW to be a learner, you will be spending your time trying to manage behaviors rather than teaching.
Start first with teaching them HOW to be an ACTIVE LISTENER:
*Put away distractions, including your own thoughts
*Focus on the speaker, face your body toward them
*You are listening, not talking
*Take notes of important points
*Don't interrupt
*Paraphrase and ask questions AFTER they are done
Never assume your students know HOW to be a learner. I have had many students come to me unprepared to learn. Unless they learn the habits of learning, you will be talking to a wall.
Keep reinforcing "active listening" through modeling and expectations.
A habit doesn't become a habit until it has been repeated continuously over time.
