Today marks 65 years since #Eritreaâs armed liberation struggle began in 1961, when #HamidIdrisAwate took up arms after the #UN federation with #Ethiopia was violated & #Eritrea đŞđˇ annexed, ending peaceful efforts for self-determination sacrificed to #Ethiopian & allied interests
Today, Tuesday, September 1st, marks the 65th anniversary of the start of the armed struggle for independence in Eritrea, celebrated both within the country and in the diaspora. Following the end of European colonialism, Eritrea was placed under a federal arrangement with Ethiopia, a decision made against the wishes of the Eritrean people. This arrangement began when the United Nations passed a resolution on December 2, 1950. The federation lasted for ten years before Ethiopia proceeded to annex Eritrea. The violation of this federal agreement by Ethiopia, combined with the international community's silence, left the Eritrean people with no choice but to initiate an armed struggle for independence. On September 1, 1961, Hamid Idris Awate announced the beginning of the war of liberation. Awate is honored by Eritreans as the founding father of this struggle. In honor of his contributions, many government and private institutions have been named after him, and a statue has been erected in Haikota, located in the Gash Barka region.
Before the armed struggle began, the people of Eritrea had been fighting legally and politically against Ethiopian repression and international conspiracy. From 1941 to 1961, they sought the right to self-determination through peaceful means, but their efforts were in vain. On December 2, 1950, when the United Nations passed its federal resolution, Ethiopia's and its allies' interests took precedence over those of the Eritrean people. From the very beginning, it was evident that the right to self-determination for the Eritrean people was sacrificed to protect the interests of Ethiopia and her allies. This interest was clearly articulated by U.S. Secretary of State John Foster Dulles, who stated: âFrom the point of view of justice, the opinions of the Eritrean people must be taken into account. Nevertheless, the strategic interests of the U.S. in the Red Sea region, along with considerations of security and world peace, necessitate that our country remain allied with Ethiopia.â As a result, the establishment of an independent and sovereign Eritrea was obstructed to serve others' interests. The historical right of the Eritrean people to self-determination was overlooked, leading to a situation where, as African nations moved from colonial rule to independence, Eritrea transitioned from European colonialism to Ethiopian domination.

SEPTEMBER 1: THE DAY A PEOPLE REFUSED TO SURRENDER
65 Years Later, The Responsibility Is Ours
By Abraham Gebremichael
September 1 is more than a date in Eritrean history.
It is a memory.
It is a promise.
And 65 years later, it is a responsibility.
On September 1, 1961, Hamid Idris Awate and his companions took a stand that would echo across generations. What began with a small group of determined Eritreans became a struggle carried by an entire people.
They did not begin with guarantees of victory.
They began with belief.
They believed that injustice should not be accepted simply because it appeared stronger. They believed that dignity was worth defending. And they believed that a people determined to shape their own destiny could not be silenced forever.
That belief passed from generation to generation.
From village to village.
From Muslim to Christian.
Across Eritrea's nine ethnic groups.
Different languages. Different traditions. Different faiths.
But when history called, they discovered something greater than their differences:
a shared destiny.
That is one of the deepest meanings of September 1.
The struggle was not carried by one religion, one ethnicity, one region, or one family. Eritrea's freedom was built through sacrifice shared across the nation.
Some carried weapons.
Some carried food.
Some carried the wounded.
Some carried messages.
Some carried children through uncertainty.
And some carried grief for the rest of their lives.
Together, they carried Eritrea.
Today, 65 years later, our responsibility is different.
The generation before us fought to make Eritrea possible.
Our generation must help make Eritrea worthy of their sacrifice.
That means refusing to allow ethnicity, religion, region, politics, or personal disagreement to turn Eritreans against one another.
Unity does not require us to think alike.
It requires us to remember that beneath our disagreements, we still belong to one another.
September 1 should therefore be more than a remembrance of the first bullet.
It should remind us of the first belief:
that Eritreans could determine their own future.
That belief must now become something constructive.
A commitment to peace.
A commitment to one another.
A commitment to our children.
And a commitment to building a country where our diversity becomes a source of strength rather than division.
Hamid Idris Awate's generation opened a road.
Thousands followed.
Many never returned.
We inherited what they carried.
Now history asks us a simple question:
What will we carry forward?
Let us carry unity instead of division.
Respect instead of suspicion.
Hope instead of bitterness.
And responsibility instead of indifference.
Because the greatest tribute we can offer those who began the journey 65 years ago is not simply to remember what they fought against.
It is to build what they fought for.
On September 1, 2026, may Eritreans everywhere remember:
Nine ethnic groups.
Different faiths.
Different experiences.
One people.
One shared history.
One responsibility for the future.
September 1, 1961 â September 1, 2026
65 Years of Memory.
65 Years of Resolve.
And the story continues.
Glory to our martyrs. Strength to our people.

Beginning of the Armed Struggle
1 Sep, 1961
On September 1, 1961, eleven rebels led by #HamidIdrisAwate attacked police posts in the west of #Eritrea including one on Mount Adal. A fierce battle ensued between Awateâs Eritrean Liberation Army, a military wing of the Eritrean Liberation Front (#ELF) and #Ethiopian forces, lasting seven hours and ending in a stalemate. This marked the beginning of the Eritrean armed struggle for independence from Ethiopia.

freedom, #HamidIdrisAwate, don't have their national IDs/passports. Is this the kind of free & independent #Eritrea our heroes & heroines fought & sacrificed their precious lives for! I Don't Think So!!!
