#Hirmand River, known in Afghanistan as #Helmand River, originates in Hindu Kush mountains near Kabul, and flows southwest through marshy areas before joining Hamoun Lake in southeast Iran. The move to release water is expected to revive #Hamoun wetlands.

#Hamoun is the largest freshwater lake in Iran, tied closely to region's biodiversity and people's livelihood, esp in Sistan-Baluchestan, one of the poorest provinces in #Iran that has for years suffered due to drought and shoddy water management.

Videos of #KamalKhan Dam's valves opening and water flowing freely toward #Iran have become viral since Tuesday, bringing cheer to Iranians as it means the parched #Hamoun wetlands in Iran's Sistan-Baluchestan province will have a new lease of life.

The water crisis has also been a chronic concern for #Iran’s neighbor to the east, Afghanistan. There have been conflicts over the Helmand River and #Hamoun wetlands in southeast Sistan-Baluchestan province, which have turned into a sea of sand in the last fifteen years.

2/ The most important and long-standing bilateral dispute has been over the #Helmand River water sharing problem; where about 96% of the IR part of the HB, comes directly from AF, and the HR is the only resource in the region supplying the #Hamoun’s wetlands water right.

A great piece indeed. Not just the Banni. 100Kms away, the #Hamoun Wetlands, though partly declared a Ramsar site&UNESCO Biosphere Reserves still suffers from such legacy of colonialism, when in 1800s/1900s they were named "wastelands"! #Helmand @RamsarConv @Lylamehta @kadambarid
