Great to see my friend @brahim_ramdhane on his visit to #WashingtonDC. Brahim is an #Abolitionist from #Mauritania. He was born enslaved, but has spent his life fighting to #endslavery and for the freedom of the #Haratin people.
Interesting Facts: The indigenous peoples of #Morocco are called the #Haratin. In fact they are also indigenous to other countries in #NorthAfrica such as #Libya, #Mauritania and #Algeria who by the way are the original #Berbers and this what they look like
At present, half of #Mauritania’s #Haratin population exists as de facto slaves. Traditionally, the Haratin men work in the farmland, whilst Haratin women are made to do domestic work.
