We are nearing the end of our chat. Thank you to everyone who participated, and very special thanks to our guest, @askdrgretchen, Dr. Gretchen Kubacky!
Keep an eye out for our next #HealthPsychChat!

@Perk_Teaches @APADivision38 You want to make sure to have a thorough ART and endocrine assessment before TTC. That way, you have a baseline for comparison, and know what nutrition, exercise, supplement, Rx, & stress reduction interventions are most impactful. #HealthPsychChat
@Perk_Teaches @APADivision38 Of course there's assisted reproductive tech (ART), but first try lifestyle mods to regulate hormone levels, including insulin levels. Many patients find themselves pregnant after getting their bodies into better balance. #HealthPsychChat
@APADivision38 A5 PCOS cuts across all races, ethnicities, religions, and even genders. Be aware that it goes hand-in-hand with Type 2 diabetes, which has reached epidemic proportions. Endocrinology is complex. #HealthPsychChat
Now it’s your chance to ask a question! What questions do you have about #PCOS and #HealthPsychology? Ask away and don’t forget to use the hashtag #HealthPsychChat in your posts!

@APADivision38 A5(3). Keep going, even when you find a dearth of earlier research. Find the people who get excited about research and whole body/whole brain treatment of the PCOS patient. Learn more about the effects of birth control pills. #HealthPsychChat
@APADivision38 A5. Prioritize this research, please. PCOS only gets 1/10,000 of 1% of NIH funding (for up to 21 of people?!). Focus on energy, mood swings, sleep disturbances, relational impacts, eating disorders, food cravings. #HealthPsychChat
Q5. Our last question of the day is: Do you have any advice for rising psychologists or researchers who are interested in working with people with PCOS?
#HealthPsychChat

@APADivision38 A3 PS - families need to know that PCOS is a lifelong syndrome, and symptoms change over time. It's critical to really show up for the PCOS patient in your family, and not scapegoat them or blame them for "having to be" healthy as a family. #HealthPsychChat
@APADivision38 A4(4). Birth control pills are not the only solution to your problem. Neither is Rx metformin. You may need to include complementary medicine in your search for wellness. And a psychologist who can help you stay the course. #HealthPsychChat
@APADivision38 A4(4) Know that you are not alone - up to 21% of people with ovaries have PCOS. Many aren't diagnosed. But this is by no means a rare problem. It takes time to figure out what works, but there IS help. #HealthPsychChat
@APADivision38 A4(3) Don't believe all the hype you read. You don't have to go G-free, dairy-free, keto or vegan. In fact, those approaches may contribute to eating disordered behavior. Get solid advice from licensed people. #HealthPsychChat
@APADivision38 A4(2) Yes, you can get pregnant if you want to, most likely - and there's a good chance you'll need medical help to do so. Start researching options NOW (that's my PSA to younger patients). #HealthPsychChat
@APADivision38 A4. Don't give up. Find a doctor who believes in you, gets to know your body, and cares about symptom relief. Find group support. See a health psychologist if you have any signs of depression or anxiety. #HealthPsychChat
Q4. What's some advice you may give to a patient with a new PCOS diagnosis who may be struggling to cope?
#HealthPsychChat

@APADivision38 A4(3) Getting funding for more research on PCOS, especially psych issues, which are devastating over the lifespan of a patient, and costly to society as well. #HealthPsychChat
@APADivision38 A4(2) Finding providers who are actually knowledgeable about the full range of PCOS symptoms. And who are willing to seek out and work with equally well-trained med & psych professionals. #HealthPsychChat
@APADivision38 A4. Lack of belief in severity of symptoms, or that a patient has been cutting calories/exercising a lot in order to control symptoms. Not seeing problem as being psychological too, not just medical. Needing to deflect from the belief that #IWL fixes everything. #HealthPsychChat
@APADivision38 A2(5). This is a solo problem. Wrong! This is a family problem, a relationship problem, a healthcare problem, and a societal problem. The cost of PCOS is huge, economically, opportunity-wise, and relationally. #HealthPsychChat
