On Sunday, January 21, around noon in Mogadishu, a 14-year-old schoolgirl disappeared in the Suuqa Xoolaha neighborhoods of the #Heliwaa district. Despite being expected home from school, her family says, Farxiya (photo withheld) never arrived, prompting the family to raise the alarm on social media, sharing her photo and full names.
To the family's astonishment, on Monday afternoon, they received a call from a Somali police officer asserting that he had married the girl, now considering her his wife. The family, unable to see the girl, insisted that the man return her before engaging in any further discussions.
I have been closely monitoring reports of missing girls predominantly shared online/Facebook by #Mogadishu residents with great concern. It is alarming that this escalating issue is not receiving the attention it deserves. The increasing number of children (mostly girls) disappearing in broad daylight across Mogadishu suggests potential involvement of criminal groups.
Civil society representatives, women activists, and affected families are highlighting two significant concerns: (1) the surge in human traffickers in #Mogadishu, who, after abducting children, demand ransom; (2) the increase in forced marriages through the kidnapping of teenage girls.
Compounding this, child marriage remains legal in #Somalia, because simply the Federal Parliament @Golaha_shac_JFS / @AqalkaSare in Mogadishu replaced long-awaited protective legislation for women and girls with a new bill endorsing child and forced marriage in August 2020.
Presently, Somalia grapples with high rates of child marriage and violence against women, including rape and female genital mutilation (FGM). According to UN, 45% of women in Somalia are married before the age of 18, and a staggering 98% have undergone FGM.
