What Does It Take to “Kill” a Monument?
A research project led by SASN historian Lyra Monteiro and grad students tracks every statue of a racist figure that fell last summer — and suggests the possibility of their resurrection is looming. @hyperallergic https://t.co/Ewc7BnGpUB
We've seen cops protect statues in the states--but sending in a strike force to remove a few people from the pedestal?
In the middle of a heavily touristed area?
Those in power know that statues matter.
This situation is unfolding now.

NOW: Police in San Juan, Puerto Rico are clearing demonstrators from the pedestal where a statue of Ponce De Leon stood until it was torn down today, the same day Spain’s King arrives in P.R. San Juan’s mayor is having the statue fixed & re-erected today.
In what may be the first statue toppling in Puerto Rico (and is certainly the first in recent years) the statue of Juan Ponce de León (who also invaded Florida) was knocked from its pedestal and broken to pieces in the historic center of San Juan last night.

La estatua de Juan Ponce de León, en la plaza San José, en Viejo San Juan, fue derribada hoy de madrugada. Esto a pocas horas de que llegue el rey de España, Felipe VI, a Puerto Rico.

It was an honor & privilege to stand guard with a small group of Newarkers to take down the Columbus Statue on Washington Park. We danced, we cried, we laughed, we smudged, and we offered up our love to our ancestors & made a new future. 📸 by @shertillet

Tear them down.... Allll of them
However, was not lost on observers that the statue of Jefferson Davis was not truly gone and most definitely not destroyed.
Instead, it was merely being transferred to another site of veneration that was already dedicated to Davis:
