Yesterday, a tragic incident took place in the Panpatha Buffer Zone of Bandhavgarh Tiger Reserve. A tiger strayed from the forest into Kherwa Tola village in search of water. During the encounter, the tiger attacked a woman, resulting in her immediate death at the scene. The tiger also assaulted family members who rushed to her rescue, causing injuries to several of them. The incident sparked widespread outrage among the villagers, leading to a retaliatory attack on the forest department team that had arrived to manage the situation. In the assault, Panpatha Ranger Prateek Shrivastava sustained serious injuries. The forest department team tranquilized the tiger by firing a dart, which struck its neck. However, due to an overdose of the tranquilizer, the tiger suffered heatstroke and died on the spot. It was a young tiger. The Chief Minister has announced a compensation of ₹25 lakh to the family of the deceased woman, along with free medical treatment for the seriously injured individuals. This unfortunate event should serve as a critical lesson for the Forest Department. The authorities must identify and list such villages located within or near forest areas and initiate the process of relocating them beyond the forest periphery without delay. Additionally, innovative measures should be implemented to mitigate potential future risks. Failure to act decisively may result in the recurrence of such incidents, leading to continued loss of human livesoften among vulnerable communitiesas well as the unfortunate deaths of tigers.
