#AI Models Think About #Risk Differently 🧠🤖🎯
Our new paper, accepted for presentation at the #ACM International Conference on AI in Finance (#ICAIF ’25) and the AI for Finance Symposium in Singapore, uncovers how GPT models handle risk, ambiguity, and infinite rewards, and how their choices differ sharply from human decision-making.
The main finding: AI risk behavior isn’t aligned with human or trader risk preferences.
That gap matters. When AI is used in decision-making, it can take actions that look logical to the model but irrational to us.
Finance professionals and researchers should quantitatively measure and align a model’s risk tolerance before deploying it in trading, allocation, or pricing. Without this alignment, AI-driven strategies could quietly distort risk–reward outcomes.
We call for more work on AI risk-profile alignment as part of the broader model alignment agenda. Until we can measure and adjust a model’s risk appetite, using it for complex financial decisions remains risky.
🎯 Risk profile: GPT-4 variants act extremely risk-averse across 107 Holt–Laury lotteries. GPT-5 is near risk-neutral and chooses higher-EV risk more often. A “Strategic Thinker” persona turns GPT-4 models risk-seeking, while GPT-5 stays balanced.
🧭 Ambiguity: In Ellsberg tasks, GPT-4.1 and 4o-mini avoid ambiguity almost entirely. GPT-5 tolerates it. Persona nudges GPT-5 and o3-mini toward neutrality. GPT-4o moderates. GPT-4.1 remains unchanged. Calibrate models before deployment.
🧪 Infinite payoffs: In St. Petersburg games, GPT-4 thresholds mimic human caution at low fees. GPT-5 and o3-mini keep playing at higher fees. Persona further lifts thresholds. Add discounting guardrails and fee caps.
🛠️ Put to work: Pick models by behavior, not brand. Use personas to tune, but watch for overshoot. Add task-level constraints and price thresholds. Test along three axes separately. Log parameters for audit. Iterate with live A/B checks.
