I don’t think it’s just because I haven’t been to a conference for a while - but I really enjoyed that one. Definitely something very special about talking to real people again for a while. Normal service (political ranting) resumes soon! #ICOS22
How can we achieve a sustainability transition? Electrification and massive increase in renewables; rethinking use of space to protect nature and rewild; changing our food system. #ICOS22
Gulf Stream already weakened by 30% and may get significantly worse within our lifetimes with potential risk of mass extinction event in future. #ICOS22
While sat in the office, in a rainy Manchester, today I channelled some Spanish vibes 😎🌞and attended the #ICOS22 as an online delegate. Watched some brilliant presentations 👏 and made a nuisance of myself asking lots of questions 😀
Fascinating plenary talk by David Humphries. I can’t believe that the same potential geo-engineering schemes that I discussed as an undergraduate are still not scalable to any practical degree thirty years later. #ICOS22
Mohamed Osmani from Loughborough Uni now talking about designing out construction waste (which makes up 35% of all waste - the biggest contributor in UK). #ICOS22
Good question asked about how this approach takes account of social-cultural issues (greening the curriculum etc) - the answer is that the universities are piloting this in parallel with footprinting. #ICOS22
Should universities measure their own ecological footprint as an institution? Erasmus project focuses on enhancing sustainability of higher education institutions: https://t.co/ymhIAavPSJ #ICOS22

Earth overload day was 29th July in 2021 - the date when demand for ecological resources and services exceeds what can be regenerated within the year. #ICOS22
Really great discussion about our SLKE model at the 'On Sustainability Conference 2022' - delighted to have a large audience of interested discussants. Lots and lot of interest in our project from attendees. #ICOS22
Can you fight a war against climate change? Very difficult to discern liability. Responsibility is temporally and globally dispersed. Who is the aggressor? Is there even one..? To be just war, it must be a proportionate counter-attack against an aggressor. #ICOS22
So we need more on sustainability pedagogy rather than a focus on SDGs as content - and more thought on how we conduct research sustainably (not just doing more research on sustainability). #icos22
Reflecting on fascinating keynote from @DaniellaTilbury and I’m struck by how much of what we do on sustainability in HE research and teaching is about content (*what* we do). Much less focus on *how* we teach or research sustainably. #ICOS22
@DaniellaTilbury closes with several questions for the conference: What are the signs of disruption? How can we recognise and support it? Is my work disrupting or sustaining the status quo? #ICOS22
Even more important changes in HE driven by divestment from fossil fuels. Impact much beyond the university boundaries. Half of UK universities have committed to divestment already. #ICOS22
What does disruption look like? University of Cambridge removed beef and lamb from menus on campus, resulted in massive reduction of CO2 in food bought. But also ripple effect of conversations across campus. #ICOS22
SDGs are about responsibility and action. They are about questioning our current ways of living and working (including in universities). Making structural changes (not just turning off lights!). #ICOS22
What does disruption look like in HE? Why is it needed? 85% of uni strategic plans promise a better future for their graduates. SDGs are not about content but doorways to change. This is (or should be) disruptive! #ICOS22
David Humphries talking about new frontiers. The first truly blended event (probably not the last). Interdisciplinary approach linking academia & practice. Climate change the most pressing problem of our time which we should work to address through teaching and research. #ICOS22
