The all-new #CommunityIndex reports contain an extensive discussion of housing affordability, supply, discrimination & evictions in all of CT’s cities: https://t.co/aEp7L1iqI3 Thank you @CProgressNews @MelvilleTrust @PSCHousing for bringing attn to this at #iForums19 today! #nnip

Thank you to everyone who came to #IForums19! Make sure to pick up Alan Mallach’s latest book, The Divided City: Poverty and Prosperity in Urban America!

ST: For residents where homeownership isn’t an option, what can we do to bring down housing costs?
AM: Look at small multi-family housing — preserving this kind of housing in CT where it’s prevalent. Decrease absenteeism and enable owners to be small local landlords. #IForums19
See the @NLIHC’s “The Gap” report for more info on the national deficit of housing affordable for low-income residents https://t.co/CpuWnLnfC3 #IForums19
AM: In conclusion, what we need is a national housing allowance program to end mass evictions and provide stable housing to all low-income families, much like SNAP and Medicaid for their respective services. #IForums19

Stunning statistic: one out of every 18-20 families in #Hartford is evicted each year. 1,500-2,000 households disrupted, childrens’ futures compromised, neighborhoods destabilized, simply because people cannot afford to keep a roof over their heads. #AffordableHousing #iForums19
AM: In Hartford, even residents of subsidized housing can be cost-burdened. LIHTC housing relies on Section 8 subsidies to be affordable to low-income residents — without subsidies, residents are at massive risk of being evicted. #IForums19

AM: In the Hartford region, racial and economic disparities are stark. When we build subsidized housing through LIHTC in Greater Hartford, we can’t do it solely in areas of concentrated poverty (see @jacquelinerabe latest article) #IForums19

@ConnConnection PowerPoint slides will be hosted on our website after the presentation — recap will be on the website by tomorrow morning #IForums19
Hoping @PSCHousing will be able to share the PowerPoint from today’s presentation - this is great info but hard to process it all in real time #iForums19
Middle income families have severe housing needs in expensive, high demand areas. Poor or near poor families - particularly single women with children - have severe housing needs EVERYWHERE #AffordableHousing #iForums19
“If you’re poor, it doesn’t matter whether you live in San Francisco, Atlanta, Cleveland, or Coffeyville KS (lowest median cost housing in USA) - you’re screwed.” Alan Mallach at @PSCHousing #iForums19
It costs money to provide housing. Landlords need to charge a certain amount for rent unless they are operating apartments as a charitable endeavor and take a loss. Doesn’t mean that the housing will be affordable. #iForums19
At the Lyceum in Hartford for this morning’s iForum - A Presentation by Alan Mallach: Understanding America’s Multiple Affordable Housing Crises #iforums19 #affordablehousing

Today we are at @PSCHousing to learn about and discuss America’s housing crises. Community action agencies are part of the solution! #iforums19

Follow this thread as we livetweet #IForums19, starting in half an hour! Author Alan Mallach will discuss:
- Cost of rental housing in the US
- Role of housing supply in lowering rental costs
- How we can decrease cost burden and make housing more affordable across communities

Why do we need land banks? Consider one blighted property — right nextdoor to us on 213 Lawrence Street. After foreclosure, a bank sold this property to an out-of-town “investor” who hasn’t put any money into redevelopment and owes $20,000 in taxes. #IForums19

Thank you to everyone who came to #IForums19, and everyone who engaged and showed their support on Twitter! We had a great time following the conversation and listening to our expert group of local and national speakers discuss family homelessness. Stay tuned for more!
