1. THE BEGINNING: PASS GRADE DIDN'T LIMIT HIM
Born 22nd April 1938, Ondo. Lost his dad early.
Mother was a trader.
No money. No "perfect grades". No connections.
Went to the UK 1961
and worked as welder, dishwasher, clerk to fund University of London.
He proved that a PASS GRADE and POVERTY should not limit
or restrict one's
progress in life.
University of London LLB 1964. Called to English Bar 1965. If Gani could rise from "pass grade"
to SAN, then nobody’s story is finished.
2. FOUGHT TO BE LAW
Nigerian Law School 1965 denied him:
"Over-age. Not of good character" because
he was an activist.
He sued them. Won.
Called to Nigerian Bar 1966. He broke the
gate for all of us.
3. JAILED: 30+ TIMES. BETRAYED.
Kirikiri. Kuje. Alagbon. Under 5 military regimes.
Denied SAN for 20 years. NBA fought him.
Govts he defended later detained him.
But he said: "Prison is
my second home.
The cell is my office."
4. SENIOR ADVOCATE OF THE MASSES - SAM
1993: OAU Students gave him SAM because establishment refused him SAN.
He is the ONLY PERSON EVER to hold SAM.
Got SAN in 2001. Rejected OFR,
MON, CON in life.
Family received GCON posthumously in 2018.
5. EVERY LAWYER'S GUIDE: NWLR 1985
Founded NIGERIAN WEEKLY LAW REPORTS so judgments won’t take 5 years.
NWLR still runs today. Every lawyer lives on it.
He also INSTRUCTED that his Chambers
be DISSOLVED
after his death. No commercialization.

Fawehinmi v. Akilu (1987) - Gave us Public Interest Litigation.
Any citizen can sue govt.
Garba v. Uni Maiduguri (1986) - Student rights.
Right to Fair Hearing & Natural Justice Principle.
AG Lagos v. AGF (2003) - Fought Tinubu govt on LGs.
7. HE SUED TINUBU & IGP ON CHICAGO CERTIFICATE
2000-2003: He dragged Gov. Tinubu & IGP to court over questionable Chicago State University certificate, perjury & non-disclosure.
They called him

I am standing here today because one man with "pass grade" background decided poor students deserved a chance.
Chief did not know me. But he believed
in "the masses".
And I am part of the masses he lifted.
