Elite capture only works while three things still hold: a population that believes the system can still deliver something, an economy that can still be looted without collapse, and enough coercive power to keep the lid on. All three are failing at once. Resources are extracted and concentrated. Institutions are hollowed out so they serve only the extractors. Public goods decay because those who captured the state no longer need them. The result is a growing mass of people with no stake in the existing order. Population growth turns this from slow rot into a countdown. Nigeria is not merely adding people. It is adding large numbers who have been denied the things that make a person resourceful: skills, capital, reliable work, and any reason to believe the future is worth building. That is not culture. It is the predictable outcome of decades of extraction instead of investment. The surplus that could have built capability was consumed. The number of people who must live off a shrinking productive base keeps rising. The ratio gets worse every year. The same people who created the hunger and the ignorance now own the machinery that keeps them in power: the cash, the party structures, the security connections, the media reach. They use the hunger they produced to buy votes. They use the ignorance they maintained to make those votes cheaper. Hunger and ignorance have been weaponized against the very people who suffer them. Professionalism has collapsed. Being a nuisance on social media now determines livelihoods. That inversion is not random. When real competence was never rewarded at scale, attention and patronage became the remaining currencies. Nigerians are not simply poor. They are locked in a loop the money-bags designed and now police. The appearances of leadership are themselves purchased. Party structures are mostly vehicles for money and loyalty, not institutions. Paid crowds are not constituencies; they are rented for the day. Media presence is not proof of capacity; it is bought visibility. These are stage props. In the Osun election, the two parties people paid attention to, APC and Accord, were not alternatives. They were rival managers of the same problem the people have been praying against. Same leadership ideology, different appearances. Accord functioned as insurance: a new costume for the same extraction so the incumbent could remain in the game. They did not fight to serve. They fought for access to the biggest meat in the pot of governance. Nigeria has not stopped buying the show because the real measures of leadership were allowed to die. When professionalism died, the remaining public signal of “who can lead” became who can afford the performance. The same class that created the desperation also owns the ability to produce the show. So the electorate is trained, election after election, to read the costume of power as the capacity to govern. This is the closed circuit. The loot is used not only for private consumption but to lock the door. The people who were made desperate are then paid, in small doses, to re-elect the authors of the desperation. When the remaining resources become too scarce relative to the numbers, the violence will not stay neatly directed at the elites. It will turn inward. People will hunt each other because the state has already hunted the future. That is the brutal implosion elite capture is manufacturing. The ruling class is not enjoying a permanent arrangement.
