Revealing response from Bristol university to being humiliated by an employment tribunal that found it unfairly dismissed academic David Miller for his anti-Zionist beliefs. The university says it recognises "members of our community hold very different views from one another. We would, therefore, encourage everyone to respond in a responsible and sensitive way in the current climate." And yet, as the tribunal concluded, the university did exactly the opposite of what it urges everyone to do now: act responsibly and sensitively. By its own admission, Bristol university knew there were deep ideological divisions within its ranks about Israel and whether it is an inherently racist project – as the Gaza genocide is now all too clearly confirming. But the university chose to ignore its obligations both to the core principle of academic freedom and to David Miller as its employee, and join one side in hounding a leading figure on the other side. It did precisely what a university claims it is not there to do: persecute someone for their ideological views. The tribunal's verdict has exposed Bristol university for the hollow shell of an academic institution it is. In a rightly ordered society, heads there would roll. But nothing will happen – confirming, once more, that Israel must be protected as the fist wielded by a racist, colonial West in the oil-rich Middle East.
