On April 15, I engaged traditional leaders in planting indigenous trees at the Bamunkumbit Palace Sacred Forest as part of the activities to mark the #IndigenousTreeDay organized by the #African Tree Seed Group to promote the planting of threatened native species.

On Tuesday, 15 April 2025, SANBI joined the rest of the continent in celebrating #IndigenousTreeDay (ITD), a growing African initiative dedicated to the conservation and sustainable use of our indigenous trees.

In celebration of #indigenoustreeday, JCPZ, together with Ward Cllr Nicolene Jonker, joined various African cities by planting 30 indigenous tree species in Johannesburg Botanical Gardens.
Indigenous Tree Day (ITD) marks a significant initiative where African nations and global partners, under the banner of the African Tree Seeds Group (ATSG), come together for a common mission: combating biodiversity loss. This annual celebration, held on 15 April, provides a global platform to honor and protect our indigenous tree species, regardless of where we are in the world
Indigenous trees are more than just greenery; they are essential to our ecosystem. They improve soil quality and contribute to climate regulation.
