Here's a first-generation @OfficialZSL #InstantDetect2 @IridiumComm satellite connected #cameratrap that spent 5 years on Henderson Island in the South Pacific to monitor ocean plastics. Thanks for the recovery effort @howellconserve. #ID2 is now ready to scale. #Tech4Wildlife

📸Camera traps have revolutionised how conservationists monitor and understand the natural world.
#InstantDetect2 will revolutionise camera traps.
🌍 The Challenge
Climate change and human activity have pushed our precious planet to its limit causing devastating habitat and species loss.
Landscapes requiring urgent conservation action are often unconnected, with no cellular or WiFi connectivity.
Monitoring and protecting these remote unconnected landscapes is hard, risky and slow.
💡 The Solution
#InstantDetect2 is the world’s first affordable satellite-connected camera trap system.
Its camera traps and sensors transmit their images and data to the Cloud in near real-time using affordable satellite connectivity.
Developed by the Zoological Society of London, #InstantDetect2 has been designed by conservationists, for conservationists.
🗝 Key Features
🏝 Light-weight and foot-portable, #InstantDetect2 can get to the most inaccessible landscapes.
⚡ Running off batteries and using satellite connectivity, it works anywhere in the world without any additional infrastructure.
📲 As a complete out-of-the-box solution with simple controls, it can be set-up and maintained by non-technical users.
💰 Low-cost hardware, coupled with an unbeatable @IridiumComm satellite airtime package, provides unrivaled cost of coverage.
💪 Built for the most harsh and remote landscapes, the system is robust, reliable and long-lasting.
Stay tuned for my next post to see how #InstantDetect2 will be made accessible to the conservation community...

Imagine if those working to protect our Earth’s environment and wildlife could place a camera or sensor anywhere in the world and see the images and data being captured in near real-time.
With ZSL's #InstantDetect2, now they can...
#InstantDetect2 has the potential to have wide ranging conservation impact:
Conservationists could get real-time insights about wildlife and the environment.
Is the waterhole dry?
How many offspring were born today?
Where is the herd feeding now?
This would speed up decision making and lead to more effective conservation responses.
Wildlife rangers working in the vast and unconnected protected areas could use the system to detect and prevent wildlife poachers or illegal loggers from causing irreversible death and destruction.
#InstantDetect2 would act as a force multiplier, enabling small teams to patrol and monitor large areas more safely and effectively.
Communities living alongside wildlife could use #InstantDetect2 to provide advanced warning of wayward elephants or big cats and thereby prevent human-wildlife conflict.
This could save both human and animal lives.
All going well 🤞, 2024 to be the year that sees #InstantDetect2 scale and launch!
So ask yourself this,
Where would you put yours?
What might you discover?
Could it change the world?

#Tech4Wildlife #InstantDetect2 is ready for Beta testing! Our Beta testers will shortly deploy #ID2 in a range of unconnected environments for real conservation uses. We are so excited to see how the systems perform. To make the system as low cost as possible, 1/2

@tjvandam @SamSeccombe @wildlabs @SmartParksOrg Hmm too bad! There is a more recent thread on the #InstantDetect2 and a metal detecting sensor @ https://t.co/h3eVBxhPJ9 So the project is still alive it seems!
Illegal human activity in protected areas is causing irreversible biodiversity loss and habitat destruction, sometimes on an industrial scale. To stop this conservationists are using #Tech4Wildlife and #cameratraps. But how can a camera trap detect only human activity?🧵 1/

#InstantDetect2 is #Tech4Wildlife built by conservationists, for conservationists. The system is in the latter stages of Alpha testing @ZSLWhipsnadeZoo and we hope to release more information about our testing in the next few months. End of🧵. 13/
For a connected camera trap like the #LoRa and @Iridium connected #InstantDetect2 cameras, this would result in significantly less battery consumption and airtime usage, while also reducing the time spent by the system's operators checking on, or responding to, false alerts. 12/
These results demonstrate that the metal triggered #InstantDetect2 camera significantly reduces the number of false alerts when detecting human activity when compared with a camera trap using a PIR sensor. 11/

This gives the metal triggered #InstantDetect2 camera an Accuracy score of 96.6% compared to 2.3% for the PIR camera, with a Precision score of 20.5% compared with 2.3%. So what? 10/
Looking at these false negatives we can calculate a true negative result of 985 non-triggers for the metal triggered #InstantDetect2 camera, i.e. the number of times when the PIR camera triggered when there was no human activity but the metal triggered camera did not. 9/
The false negative images show that the metal triggered #InstantDetect2 camera triggers if an animal stands directly on top of the sensor, and empty images are experienced when lighting storms have been in the area, probably due to lightning strikes. 8/

Both #InstantDetect2 cameras have captured false negatives, images where there is no human activity. For the PIR camera this was 707 triggers for wildlife and 313 triggers where the image is empty. For the metal detecting camera this was 28 triggers for wildlife and 7 empty. 7/
Both #InstantDetect2 cameras captured every human activity event. In technical speak this means that the cameras have a perfect Recall score of 1.0 with no false negatives. However, the PIR camera has triggered 1044 times compared to 44 times by the metal detecting camera. 6/

Both #InstantDetect2 cameras were strapped to a tree in the middle of a deer paddock @ZSLWhipsnadeZoo and left for a month. They were checked three times during the test and otherwise there would have been no human activity in front of them. The results are conclusive. 5/

To test this we compared two #InstantDetect2 camera traps. One was triggered by the in-built passive infra-red (PIR) sensor that detects changes in heat and motion, the other used the @bartingtonltd metal detecting sensor buried 10 metres in front of the camera. 4/
#InstantDetect2 connected camera traps solve this problem using a @bartingtonltd metal detecting sensor to trigger the camera. The metal detecting sensor constantly measures the Earth’s magnetic field and will trigger when it detects a small change caused by moving metal. 2/

#Tech4Wildlife #InstantDetect2 is running @ZSLWhipsnadeZoo with 5 LoRa connected camera traps covering >6Km2. Thousands of images are being captured and sent up to the cloud each month using #Iridium satellite connectivity with 90% of images arriving <15mins after capture. GSTK

What’s that? You’ve just sent this image 6.7 Km all the way from Torquay to Brixham! Well done you clever #InstantDetect2 LoRa camera! #Tech4Wildlife
