Earlier today, the crypto market experienced another bout of sharp volatility. Bitcoin briefly dipped to USD 72,945 before rebounding, down about 3.37% over the past 24 hours, erasing all gains since Donald Trump’s victory in the U.S. presidential election on November 6, 2024. Ethereum rebounded from a low of USD 2,110 to around USD 2,340, with a 24-hour decline of roughly 4.3%. Solana fell below the USD 100 mark, while total crypto market capitalization dropped about 3.3% over 24 hours, led by losses in altcoins.
In U.S. equities, the Dow Jones closed down 0.3%, the S&P 500 fell 0.8%, and the Nasdaq declined 1.4%. Tech stocks broadly retreated: Nvidia dropped 2.8%, Microsoft was down nearly 3%, and PayPal plunged 20.3%. Crypto-related stocks were also under broad pressure.
Political developments also weighed on markets. U.S. President Donald Trump signed a government funding bill at the White House, ending a partial federal government shutdown that began on January 31. The bill funds federal agencies through September 30 and provides two weeks of funding for the Department of Homeland Security, which has faced controversy over immigration enforcement, allowing continued improvements to departmental operations.
On crypto legislation, Senate Democrats will hold another closed-door meeting tomorrow to discuss the Cryptocurrency Market Structure Bill (the CLARITY Act), marking the first meeting since the Banking Committee postponed its review last month. White House adviser Patrick Witt stated that provisions targeting Trump or his family would not be accepted, calling the ethics rules in early drafts “completely absurd.”
The bill is currently deadlocked over multiple issues, including proposals to bar senior government officials from profiting from the crypto industry. Sources say the White House has instructed industry participants to submit a compromise proposal by the end of February, but with midterm elections approaching, the bill still faces significant hurdles to passage.
