OTD in 1503 - #JamesIV of Scotland married Margaret Tudor, daughter of #HenryVII at Holyrood Abbey.
The marriage was intended by Henry VII to secure peace in the British Isles, but this policy didn’t survive for long after his death. His son & Margaret’s brother #HenryVIII wanted to pursue England’s historic claim to France. When Henry invaded France, James felt duty bound to invade northern England under the terms of the Auld Alliance between Scotland & France & this resulted in his defeat & death at the Battle of Flodden in 1513.
After James’s death Margaret made two
further marriages of her own choosing, both of which proved disastrous. The first to Archibald Douglas, Earl of Angus in 1514, who was described by even his own uncle as a ‘young witless fool.’ This marriage alienated the other Scottish nobles, strengthened the hand of Margaret’s pro-French opponents, lost her the regency & custody of her som #JamesV & forced her to flee to England,
On her return to Scotland in 1517 she discovered her husband who she had married for love had been living in her absence with his former mistress Lady Jane Stewart at her expense.
In March 1527 Pope Clement VI granted Margaret a divorce from Angus. It is ironic that her petition had been opposed by Henry VIII & Cardinal Wolsey, given Henry’s own developing Great Matter. Henry & Wolsey viewed Angus as a valuable ally of England & therefore had supported his attempts to remain married to Margaret.
Margaret then married Henry Stewart, Lord Methven on 3 March 1528. This was another unwise choice as Methven treated her even worse than Angus had, taking multiple mistresses while making extravagant use of her money.
