spent more than twenty years helping to keep wounded #soldiers alive — but when he needed help himself, he felt his calls had gone unheard.
In May 2019, Staff Sergeant Jamie “Fergie” Ferguson was serving as a #combat #medic in Malawi when 22-year-old Guardsman Mathew Talbot was fatally injured after an elephant charged during a counter-poaching operation.
Jamie fought to keep him alive.
According to his wife Sammi, he worked on the young #Guardsman for around two hours. The wider medical and evacuation effort continued for more than four.
Talbot could not be saved.
For Jamie, it became a turning point.
He had already spent years treating the worst injuries war could inflict. An #RAMC medic who served with A Squadron, 22 #SAS, Jamie deployed repeatedly to #Iraq and #Afghanistan.
In 2009, he was flown into the aftermath of the Blue 25 insider attack in #Helmand, where five #British servicemen were killed and others suffered serious gunshot wounds.
His job was to go towards the wounded.
To treat them.
To stabilise them.
To give them a chance of coming home.
After Malawi, Sammi saw a change. Jamie sought medical help and was diagnosed with an acute stress reaction. He later gave up his paramedic qualification, no longer wanting to practise medicine.
The man who had spent his career carrying others through their worst moments was now struggling beneath the weight of his own.
On 18th June 2020, aged 36, Jamie died by #suicide at Leuchars military base in Fife.
Before his death, he recorded a message saying he had asked for help and felt he had not been heard.
Months later, the official inquiry into Mathew Talbot’s death identified shortcomings in casualty evacuation and medical planning.
After Jamie’s death, Sammi spoke publicly in the hope that his story might help other #servicemen, #veterans and families.
Jamie spent his adult life trying to save others. His legacy reminds us that those who run towards trauma can carry wounds no one else can see — and that when someone asks for help, they must be heard.
SSG Ferguson joined the #Army aged 16 and served for more than 20 years. As a member of the Royal Army Medical Corps he went on to serve with the SAS. 🦅
In Afghanistan he was involved in treating the victims of a 2009 attack by a rogue police officer who shot dead three #GrenadierGuards and two #RoyalMilitaryPolicemen.
Jamie was described as one of the most experienced combat medics saving many lives in his career
