The text sheds light on the significant injustices and systemic inequalities in the Somali Regional State of Ethiopia, particularly within the #Jarar region. Since its establishment in #1993, the region, initially comprised of four districts (Awaare, Gaashaamo, Dhagaxbuur, and Dhagaxmadow), has expanded to 11 districts and one city administration. However, this expansion has not been equitable. While districts like Awaare and Dhagaxbuur have been divided into multiple smaller districts, Gaashaamo and Darroor have seen no changes, despite their large land areas and resource needs. In Ethiopia, resources and political representation are allocated based on the number of districts. This system has disadvantaged areas like Gaashaamo and Darroor, which, together, only receive 14% of the region's 928 million Birr budget. Meanwhile, 86% is allocated to the western districts, despite Gaashaamo and Darroor having a combined landmass larger than all the western districts combined. Political representation reflects similar inequalities. While Dhagaxbuur district originally had three parliamentary representatives in 1993, it now boasts 17 due to its division into multiple districts and city administrations. In contrast, Gaashaamo’s representation has stagnated, highlighting the systemic bias that prioritizes certain areas over others. These injustices are not isolated to the Jarar region. Under previous administrations, favoritism was rampant, with power and resources concentrated among specific clans. Sadly, the current system continues this legacy of inequity, leaving many communities marginalized. Such imbalances and injustices undermine the principles of fairness and equal opportunity. A local resident who spoke with Addis Standard said that the protest erupted after individuals allegedly commissioned by the regional government sealed a water borehole vital for locals. Shugri was shot dead while breastfeeding her four-month old baby at her doorstep, the resident said.
