Regime axes of advance are clearly visible (marked in red), each flanked by earthen berms.
But in Jobar, Rebels fought underground too.
Most Regime axes of advance in this area were hit by tunnel bombs, leaving massive craters behind (marked in black).

A delegation from the #UnitedNations Development Programme, headed by @alexanderdecroo, visited the #Jobar district in #Damascus to assess the scale of destruction and damage caused by the shelling of the former regime.
The delegation will visit several areas across #Syria to review needs and priorities through field tours and meetings with a number of officials. 🇸🇾

#Syria: after years of unsuccessful assaults on #Jobar (E. Damascus), in June 2017 Regime decided to attack from another axis, hoping to fully encircle the Rebel-held district by splitting it from Ain Terma.
The offensive lasted six months and involved significant firepower and a large number of Regime troops, led by the Republican Guard and the 4th Division and backed by many militias.
Regime’s advances were fiercely opposed by Rebels led by Faylaq Rahman. After 3 weeks of ferocious fighting, Regime managed to capture the southern outskirts of Ain Terma - a valley where firepower gave Regime a decisive advantage.
But the hardest part was yet to come: the urban warfare.
Rebels adapted their tactics to maximize Regime losses, defending every building. When Regime troops eventually managed to capture one of them, it was then detonated using underground tunnels. Faylaq Rahman took this tactic to its peak in this battle and such level remains a unique case in the entire war.
Despite the growing human cost, Regime continued pushing forward, slowly but surely advancing along the highway separating the 2 districts and threatening to cut Ain Terma off from Jobar.
Rebels’ scorched earth policy culminated on 27th September 2017, when they detonated an entire area - already flattened by bombardment and clashes. This spectacular operation, captured on video, killed 45 Regime soldiers.
Although the offensive did not end immediately, it slowed considerably after that strike. After more buildings were tunnel-bombed by Rebels, Regime ended up halting the offensive in December, without achieving its primary goal: fully besieging Jobar.

German FM #Annalena_Baerbock visited the Damascus neighbourhood of #Jobar, one of the neighbourhoods that previously witnessed fighting between the Syrian authorities & the opposition, during her visit to the Syrian capital, Damascus.
