The Minister of Mines #JuliusMathai boasted that under his leadership in 2023, Sierra Leone exported over 1.2B Worth of Minerals but he was unable to tell how much the country benefited from that. Despite his refusal to explain the benefits to Sierra Leone, the General Purpose Financial Statement of the Government of Sierra Leone revealed that in 2023, Mines and Minerals just contributed 6% to the domestic revenue. Thus the composition of domestic revenues for FY2023 are as follows, Income tax revenue contributed SLE3,986 million or 35% of the total domestic revenue for the financial year, Goods and Services Tax (GST) revenue amounted to SLE2,093million or 18% of total domestic revenue, Customs and Excise (C & E) Receipts SLE1,733 million or 15% and Mineral Revenues SLE 692 million or 6% of total domestic revenue respectively. So the actual revenue from the Mineral Sector for the year 2023 is just 692 Million Old Leones which is correspondingly little above $30,000. Guess what?? The Minister #JuliusMathai has been at the center of bad mining deals that only benefited individuals. Recently he spearheaded the monopolization of Sierra Leone’s Port and Rail to Chinese Mining Company @LRMGLRMG193100 for which his Geological Consultancy Company @Integems has reportedly benefited flurry of consultancies.
