A new report by Al Jazeera English (6 May 2026) puts a human face to the class action now proceeding before the ELC in Isiolo. The piece documents the experiences of residents from Kargi and Kalacha, among the 299 petitioners, who allege that waste from 1980s oil exploration by Amoco (later acquired by BP) contaminated their only water sources. The accounts are direct and difficult to ignore. Families speak of cancer diagnoses, loss of life, and the collapse of livelihoods tied to livestock. One parent describes a child now forced to communicate through a pipe for the rest of his life following throat cancer. Another resident points to widespread deaths across all age groups, attributing them to cancer and calling for accountability from both the State and those responsible for the alleged dumping of toxic waste. A local health worker poses the question now before the court: “We want to know what is the cause of this cancer… why is our government silent?” These are precisely the issues the court will now have to determine: causation, liability, and the scope of any remedy. As the matter proceeds, the Court will need to address both the historical conduct alleged and the present-day consequences said to flow from it.
