#KarumaUpdates— As previously communicated, pls be advised that #Karuma Bridge will be completely closed to ALL traffic starting 7:00 AM tomorrow [Monday 23rd].
The contractor will commence milling the asphalt off the deck and will then proceed with the demolition of the entire deck in preparation for the restoration works.

This is one of the alternative routes that will be available to passengers crossing to Gulu, Lira and beyond during the time that Karuma Bridge will be undergoing rehabilitation.
Crossing time is ONLY 10 minutes, Free of charge!
🔄To use the Masindi Port ferries, motorists from Kampala using the Gulu highway (through Luwero—Nakasongola—Kafu—Rwenkunye) can branch off to the right at Rwenkunye to connect to Masindi Port, which is about 8 kilometres away. #UNRAworks
📌 #KarumaUpdates: A ferry⛴️ has been assembled at Masindi Port to provide alternatives for travellers heading to Lira and beyond, following the scheduled closure of Karuma Bridge on Monday, September 23rd, 2024 for rehabilitation works.
⛴️This additional ferry is currently undergoing sea trials and can carry up to 64 passengers, doubling the capacity of the existing ferry.
🔄To use the Masindi Port ferries, motorists from Kampala using the Gulu highway (through Luwero—Nakasongola—Kafu—Rwenkunye) can branch off to the right at Rwenkunye to connect to Masindi Port, which is about 8 kilometres away.

📌#KarumaUpdates: The Minister of Works and Transport @GenWamala
has announced the CLOSURE of Karuma Bridge to ALL traffic starting Monday September 23rd, 2024.
The contractor will immediately start the demolition of the concrete deck to allow major works for its restoration, an exercise expected to last 03 months.
Alternative Routes:
1.Motorists from Kampala heading to Gulu/West Nile are advised to use Luwero—Kafu—Masindi—Paraa (Murchison Falls National Park) to connect to Pakwach or Gulu via Olwiyo and vice versa from motorists from Gulu/West Nile.
2.Motorists to Lira can use the Rwenkunye—Apac route via Masindi Port Ferry
3.Motorists to Lira can also use Iganga—Nakalama —Tirinyi—Pallisa—Kumi—Soroti—Lira and vice versa.

⚙️🔩Re-fitting and strenghthening of the steel structures
⚙️🪢Applying protective measures to prevent corrosion and increase the bridge's longevity
🔜Next phase of #UNRAworks will now focus on the bridge's surface [the driving surface], where we’ve identified fatigue, porosity & corrosion of the reinforcement, which defects have led to de-bonding of the bridge deck [separation from its support structure].
The Bridge can only accommodate light traffic [small vehicles] at the moment.
