From a policy perspective, it's a ridiculous thing to announce [because] 75% of Canadian and Mexican imports come from the United States, meaning we benefit from this trade. And it means they could retaliate.
"So what you see is the other leaders adapting to Trump's style. They have to give him an out. So what's that out? 'Friendly phone calls.' 'Good phone calls.'
"The new president of Mexico is smart enough to know that border crossings are down by 75% under the @JoeBiden administration over the last year. She lets Trump take credit for that, and it gives Trump an out.
"We're going to see a lot of this in the next four years as other leaders recognize that they just have to give Trump a way that he can tweet out a 'win.'"

#Kayyem: "And the question is who tipped them off? Was it a family member? ... As well as why the @FBI did not pursue it. You go back in any of these cases, there's always these moments -- "If only! -- someone had stepped in or if they'd gone and investigated this -- 'If only!' -- then 'this could have been stopped.'
"Those are going to be the main questions. How did he possess this? Why wasn't he stopped before? How did he stay at the golf area for so long with a car right there? And why is he doing this? For me, as someone who studies radicalization and talks often with you about political violence, there's a definite disconnect between what we're seeing before and, all of a sudden, this political violence. What happened in the last couple of weeks, months, or years that would have turned him from some guy who's very into #Ukraine to now being a potential assassin against #Trump?
"That's what you're going to want to look for: Were there other people egging him on? Was he online? Did he get radicalized by the #ButlerPA assassination attempt and he's a copycat and therefore we should worry about others?"

#Kayyem: Is the assailant "a lone individual or was he planning with others? They're going to look at social media, his emails, any contacts with others he had. This is not someone who woke up and thought, 'I want to shoot at #DonaldTrump. The [details] we've seen have shown a person who knew where the security perimeter ended and where he'd have a good shot at #Trump. That is a serious assassin. And however Trump got the blood marks, something came seriously close to harming him, a former president and the nominee for the @GOP."
Noting that there's "lots of politics going around right now," Kayyem says, "I condemn -- everyone condemns violence and the extension of violence as a political display. We have to deal with this. This democracy cannot survive if violence is utilized as part of our democratic processes."
She goes over three areas that will be considered for potential motives:
"You're going to look first for ideological enemies of #DonaldTrump. Is it someone who feels that he's a threat to a cause or movement or whatever else?
"Second, you're going to look for a psychological reason. Is this the John Hinkley reason, that maybe someone wanted to impress others, become famous or whatever?
"And the third is, was it a former supporter of Donald Trump, someone who is focused on a certain issue or reason? I think the third possibility is the least likely. But if you are an objective investigator at this stage, you're looking at those three potential motives, based on our basic understanding of how the world works right now."
